The invention relates to a medical probe signal generator. More particularly, it relates to a medical probe signal generator architecture. The present invention further relates to a system including a medical probe signal generator having an automatic probe type detector for detecting an identifier and at least one instrument cable comprising the identifier.

Computerized electrical signal generator

A method of perforating a tissue of a heart of a patient when an inferior approach to the heart is contraindicated. The method utilizes an electrosurgical apparatus and a delivery system comprising at least two dilators wherein a first dilator is configured for facilitating positioning of the electrosurgical apparatus adjacent the tissue and wherein a second dilator is configured for advancement through a perforation in the tissue. An outer diameter of the second dilator is substantially equal to or less than an outer diameter of the first dilator. The method comprises the steps of: (a) advancing the first dilator into the heart of the patient, from a superior approach, until a distal end of the first dilator is adjacent the tissue; (b) using the electrosurgical apparatus, which is positioned through the first dilator, to create a perforation in the tissue by delivering electrical energy to the tissue; (c) advancing the distal end of the electrosurgical apparatus through the perforation; (d) withdrawing the first dilator; and (e) advancing the second dilator over the electrosurgical apparatus.

Method of surgical perforation via the delivery of energy

A treatment method is disclosed for treating a bodily tissue utilizing one or more steps of removal of material as well as one or more steps of energy delivery in order to effectively treat the bodily tissue. These mechanisms of treatment may beneficially be used to induce separate treatment effects, for example to treat both the symptoms and the underlying cause of a specific pathological condition. In addition, a specific application of the inventive method is described for using the inventive method to treat an intervertebral disc.

Method of treating biological tissue

A method of surgical perforation via the delivery of electrical, radiant or thermal energy comprising the steps of: introducing an apparatus comprising an energy delivery device into a patient's heart via the patient's superior vena cava; positioning the energy delivery device at a first location adjacent material to be perforated; and perforating the material by delivering energy via the energy delivery device; wherein the energy is selected from the group consisting of electrical energy, radiant energy and thermal energy.

The present invention further relates to a medical probe signal generator having an automatic probe type detector, a user interface and operational parameter settings automatically configured according to a type of medical probe connected to the generator.

A device for creating a surgical perforation with a functional distal tip for creating a controlled perforation. The functional tip may comprise at least one active electrode for creating the perforation through the application of Radio Frequency (RF) energy. The device is curved in order to decrease the likelihood of injury to structures of a patient such as inadvertent cardiac perforation when used in transseptal perforation procedures. The device is introduced into the right atrium, and the functional tip is then positioned against the atrial septum. Energy is applied to create the perforation. The tip is advanced toward the left atrium to create the perforation and as it advances into the left atrium, the device takes on its curved shape to direct the tip away from cardiac structures. The position of the tip of the device can be determined in response to pressure sensed at the tip and determined by a monitor.

An intradiscal device for treatment of a patient's intervertebral disc. The device has two elongate probes for insertion to two spaced apart treatment sites of the annulus fibrosus. The distal portions of each probe have energy delivery means for delivering energy between the distal portions of the probes through the annulus fibrosus adjacent the two treatment sites. The energy is preferably electrical energy the probes may be inserted surgically through respective elongate introducer tubes.

Intradiscal lesioning device

For creating a hole in body tissue and then enlarging the hole, a guidewire has a continuous diameter guidewire body having a proximal end and a distal end, a distal portion including an electrically conductive exposed tip for creating a perforation when RF current is applied and for preventing the creation of a perforation when RF current is not applied. For expanding the hole, a dilator region is provided between the distal end of the guidewire body and the distal portion for expanding the hole, and has a tapered profile. Also for expanding the hole, an inflatable balloon is located circumferentially on the guidewire body, and a catheter located on the guidewire body and in communication with the balloon for delivery of fluid to the balloon for its inflation.

Method for the radio frequency perforation and the enlargement of a body tissue

An intradiscal lesioning device for percutaneous treatment of a patient's intervertebral disc. An elongate introducer having a longitudinal hollow bore is surgically inserted from the patient's skin to extend through the annulus fibrosus thereby providing external surgical access to the nucleus pulposus through the introducer bore. An elongate probe slides through and flexibly conforms to the bore when longitudinally inserted through the bore of the introducer. The distal portion of the probe is capable of resiliently conforming to the bore in a longitudinally slidably confined configuration and resiliently rebounding to a deployed configuration when released within the nucleus pulposus. The distal portion houses lesioning devices for emitting energy toward the inner wall of the annulus fibrosus when the distal portion is in the deployed configuration. Examples of suitable energy sources include: thermal energy; radio frequency electric current; microwave emission; ultrasound emission; radioactive emission; and optical emission.
