The ionization chamber consists of a plurality of ports to accept multiple identical devices or varying devices. Ports may be arranged at various positions on the ionization chamber and at various angles with respect to the sampling orifice leading into the vacuum chamber of the mass spectrometer. A plurality of sprayers may operate in a time modulated manner and thereby the simultaneous multiplexed analysis of a multitude of samples is facilitated.

In this fashion, a homogenized radially inner partial coil system (C ) can be supplemented with an inhomogeneous radially outer partial coil system (C ), such that, through the use of a magnetic field forming device (P), the overall resulting magnet arrangement once more produces a homogeneous magnetic field in the working volume of the magnet arrangement.

The present invention relates to a means and method for decreasing the energy distribution of ions produced from solid or liquid samples by pulsed desorption method. More particularly, the present invention discloses a method wherein the kinetic energies of ions are related to their locations at a given time after the excitation event which caused their desorption. Based on this relationship between ion position and energy, an accelerating electric field is applied at a predetermined time after the excitation event. The magnitude of the applied electric field and the time of its application are such that the kinetic energy distribution of the ions is substantially reduced or eliminated.

In a time-of-flight mass spectrometer with an ion reflector located after the ion source and before the ion detector, to compensate for different starting energies of ions of equal masses, in the ion flight path inside or after the ion reflector at least one electrode is provided for, to which a pulsed high voltage is applied in such a way that within a predetermined narrow range of ion masses, time-of-flight errors for ions of equal masses due to different formation locations or times in the ion source are compensated for at the ion detector. In this way, apart from an energy compensation, also time-of-flight errors of the ions under investigation can simultaneously be compensated for.

An RF receiver coil configuration for NMR spectrometers has at least two largely mutually orthogonal RF receiver coil systems of which at least one is made from superconducting material and is at least partially cooled to a cryogenic temperature lying far below room temperature, with each RF receiver coil system comprising at least one single coil arranged symmetrically about a sample the RF receiver coil systems having differing radial separations from the sample. The inner RF receiver coil system is made from a material having differing physical characteristics in dependence on the actual operating temperature than the material of the outer RF receiver coil system, with the materials and the geometries of the RF receiver coil systems being chosen to minimize the influence of the susceptibility of the RF receiver coil system on the homogeneity of the magnetic field in the vicinity of the sample. In this fashion, the high Q values of the resonator configuration achieved by the use of superconducting material with high electrical RF conductivity can be taken advantage of while, at the same time, avoiding the substantial interfering influences of the high susceptibility of the superconducting material.

RF receiver coil configuration for an NMR spectrometer

A method of reducing radiation damping during free induction decay in NMR measurements of samples having a narrow line width uses the active switching of the quality factor value of the coil circuit of an NMR detection probe. After application of an excitation pulse to the sample, data acquisition is accomplished in periodic samples. The Q of the coil circuit is set to a high value while each sample is being taken, but is reduced significantly in between samples by detuning the coil circuit. Minimization of the high-Q state of the coil circuit and maximization of the difference between the high Q value and the low Q value greatly decrease the detrimental effects of radiation damping on free induction decay. The coil circuit Q is modified automatically by the application of a Q switching signal generated by a controller, such as a computer which controls other aspect of the NMR experiment.

Method for the reduction of radiation damping during signal acqusition

A composite RF pulse is created from a sequence of conventional homogeneous RF pulses and conventional gradient RF pulses and the composite pulse generates a gradient magnetic field with a spatially varying amplitude, but a spatially independent phase. In one embodiment of the invention, the pulse sequence consists of four conventional gradient RF pulses interspersed with two conventional homogeneous RF pulses. In another embodiment of the invention, a conventional gradient RF pulse is combined with a conventional homogeneous RF pulse and the pulse pair is repeated in order to generate an effective magnetic field with a spatially varying amplitude, but a spatially independent phase.

Pulse sequence and method for creating a radio-frequency magnetic field

The invention relates to a device and a method for mass-spectrometric analysis of substance samples which have been separated by capillary electrophoresis, particularly proteins, proteoglycanes or other protein conjugates, with ionization of the substance samples by a particularly substance-saving form of electrospraying. A method of 'microspraying' is used which permits a flow of spray liquid of only several tens of nanoliters per minute in stable spray operation. The invention consists in a loose coupling of the spray capillary to the electrophoresis capillary in a liquid environment.

Coherence transformation selectivity is improved by using combinations of homogeneous RF pulses and 'radial' RF pulses that have a uniform RF field strength throughout the sample, but whose phase (relative to the detection coil phase) has a spatial dependence such that all possible phase differences are equally represented throughout the sample. The use of radial pulses allows the spin coherences in the sample to evolve in spatial waves and the observation, or suppression, of a given coherence can be selected by using a receiver coil which has a predetermined symmetry relative to the symmetry of the spatial wave.

Method for improving selectivity in NMR experiments involving coherence

An NMR probe is designed to generate both a homogeneous RF field over the sample volume and, alternatively, a 'radial' field comprising two orthogonal gradient fields generated simultaneously in the transverse plane or a linear gradient field. The homogeneous field is generated by means of a known homogeneous coil construction, such as a Helmholtz coil or modified Helmholtz coil. The radial field can be generated by means of an inverted Helmholtz coil, either modified or unmodified, and the linear field can be generated by a Golay type coil, which coils are positioned coaxially with the homogeneous coil. The two coils are connected in parallel to the RF signal generator and switching can be accomplished either by means of an active switch or by detuning one of the coil resonant circuits when the other coil is in use.
