A method of operating a fuel delivery system for an internal combustion engine is described. The method may include, after or during engine shutdown, and during a fuel system cool down, activating the first pump; and varying the activation of the first pump responsive to temperature to maintain a higher pressure for high temperatures. By utilizing the pump to generate increased pressure at an appropriate condition during the cool down, for example, the pressures in the system can be managed to reduce the likelihood of fuel migrating to the rail.

A system and method for controlling an internal combustion engine during starting use position sensor information in addition to cylinder combustion information to transition from simultaneous fueling to sequential fueling by selecting a cylinder to receive a first sequential fuel injection. Embodiments include a system and method for controlling a sequentially fueled port injected internal combustion engine that contingently select a cylinder to receive a first sequential fuel injection based on position information indicating that the cylinder received a simultaneous fuel injection during its intake stroke. Engine rotational speed is monitored to detect combustion and determine which cylinder fired first. A first sequential fueling pulse is provided to the contingently selected cylinder unless a preceding cylinder in the firing order fires first.

System and method for starting sequential fuel injection internal combustion engine

A method to deliver fuel during a start for an internal combustion engine is described. The method provides individual cylinder fuel control based on the number of fueled cylinder events. The method offers improved engine emissions while maintaining engine run-up performance.

Cylinder event based fuel control

A method of determining the stopping position of an internal combustion engine infers the angular position of the engine's crankshaft by analyzing the periodic waveform of an output signal produced by a crankshaft position sensor. When the engine is turned off and begins to slow to a stop, an inference routine is commenced in which the ratio of the amplitude of the signal to the time of successive half periods of the waveform is calculated. The amplitude-to-time ratio is used in secondary ratio calculations to obtain ratio values that are then compared to a preselected constant. The result of the ratio value-to-constant comparison reveals whether the crankshaft is continuing to turn in the same direction, or has stopped and reversed its direction. A &ldquo;bookkeeping&rdquo; record of the current crankshaft angle is incremented or decremented by a predetermined value each time the ratios are calculated until the engine had stopped. Without the present invention method, the changes in engine rotational direction cannot be detected and simply monitoring the raw signal would give unreliable stopping position information because of the missed reversal(s).
