Monitoring voice quality passively using line echo cancellation data across a telecommunications network and reporting monitoring data to a central network management system. Network is monitored for potential voice quality issues for pro-active isolation of problems prior to customer complaints about the problems. Line echo cancellation related and non-related data for IP and other networks is gathered and correlated together to provide voice quality assessments of network performance.

Intelligent voice network monitoring using echo cancellation statistics

A method of discriminating voice, data, and facsimile calls communicated through a voice-over-packet network. The gateway is provided with software which can identify the existence of an answer signal (ANS) or a modified answer signal (ANSam) communicated between an answering modem and an originating modem over a packet network during a voice state call. The originating gateway can generate an ANS tone according to the protocols of the originating modem, using an originating-side gateway, when the existence of the ANS signal is identified by the receiving-side gateway. The originating gateway also generates an ANSam tone according to the protocols of the originating modem, using the originating-side gateway, when the existence of the ANSam signal is identified by the receiving-side gateway.

Voice/facsimile/modem call discrimination method for voice over packet networks

A device and method for providing real time compensation for packet loss in the transmission of facsimile data over packet networks to avoid the generation of page loss data and the termination of facsimile transmission. Facsimile devices have a low tolerance for interruptions in transmission. Packet networks commonly have a transmission interruption rate above the tolerance of facsimile equipment. In order to compensate for transmission interruption, the present invention teaches the buffering of facsimile data by scan line at the receiving end, the evaluation of buffered scan lines for packet loss and the discarding of scan lines having packet loss to conceal the packet loss from the receiving facsimile equipment to avoid detection of page errors by the receiving facsimile equipment which could cause loss of facsimile transmission. Discarding damaged scan lines instead of repair or replacement saves computational time and storage capacity, allowing for real-time compensation to provide for optimal transmission.

Real time fax-over-packet packet loss compensation

A system for transmitting modern signals across a packet network with improved resistance to bursty network packet loss that includes a first and a second processor, which connect a first and second V.32 and above modem to a first and a second side of the packet network and which provide a modified V.42 error correction using a Link Access Procedure for Modems (LAPM). The first and second processors provide a local interface to the V.32 and above moderns, demodulate a first and second data stream from the corresponding V.32 modems into bits, packetize the bits for transport over the packet network according to an Internet Protocol (IP), and remodulate data streams received from a remote end. The modified V.42 error correction includes a staggered redundancy of packet data, in which the staggered redundancy attaches data from a packet nto a subsequent packet n, where L&#x3e;2.

Modem transmission over packet networks

Modem relay provides a local interface to the modem on both ends of a call, demodulates the full duplex data stream, packetizes the bits for transport over an IP network, and remodulates the data stream at the remote end. It is advantageous to measure the throughput efficiency of the modem relay. The modem relay provides bandwidth savings, and resistance to network packet loss. However, the resistence is often accomplished by redundancy techniques which can reduce effective throughput rates. Because the modem data stream can be transported in a redundant fashion, which allows for seamless error recovery in the event of single or double packet loss events, lost packet recovery minimizes computational requirements and provides for recovery of lost packets during burst loss of a series of sequential packets. The present invention teaches a system and method for determining the throughput of various modem relay implementations. Design parameters can be manipulated to effectuate desired implementations within the operational characteristics of a packet network.
