A write head includes a near-field transducer near a media-facing surface of the write head. The write head includes a waveguide having a core with a first side disposed proximate to the near-field transducer. The core overlaps the near-field transducer at a substrate-parallel plane. The core includes one of a step or a taper on a second side facing away from the first side. The step or the taper causes a reduced thickness of the core normal to the substrate-parallel plane. The write head includes a cladding layer that encompassing the second side of the core and that fills in the step or the taper.

A planar collimator has first and second sections each intersecting at a junction between a first axis and a second axis normal to the first axis. Each of the first and second sections have geometries configured to receive light from a source point located on the first axis and collimate the light at respective positive and negative tilting angles relative to the second axis. The first and second sections direct the collimated light to respective first and second sides of a focusing mirror and away from a gap between the first and second sides of the focusing mirror.

A magnetic recording head with an overall planar design and tight dimensional control of throat height and notch width is achieved below the gap. Writer poles include very high magnetic moment material on both sides of the writer gap. Additionally the pole tips are shaped to provide high field with good spatial gradient for optimal writing conditions, thereby extending the capability of longitudinal recording heads for high density and high frequency applications.

A magnetic writer having an air bearing surface for confronting a surface of a rotating disc is disclosed. The magnetic writer includes a bottom pole and a top pole. The top pole includes a first top pole portion and a second top pole portion connected by a top pole extension. The top pole extension, which preferably has a uniform width at the air bearing surface, orients a magnetization of the first top pole portion substantially parallel to an air bearing surface of the magnetic writer. The bottom pole includes a base pole and a notch pole. The base pole is recessed from the air bearing surface to prevent or reduce fringe erasure fields. The notch pole, which abuts the base pole and extends from the air bearing surface to at least a magnetic throat height of the magnetic writer, has a magnetization oriented perpendicular to the air bearing surface.

High gradient disc drive writer

A process of forming a two-piece pole for an inductive write head involves first forming a first pole piece having a width between opposite side surfaces defining a gap width of a transducing gap at an air bearing surface of the head. The process next involves forming a second pole piece having a first region remote from the air bearing surface and a second region extending from the first region toward the air bearing surface. The first region is wider than the width of the first pole piece. The second pole piece is formed so that at least a portion of the second region is contiguous a portion of the first pole piece and so that no sharp external corners exist between the first pole tip piece and the second pole piece within a pole tip region of the head.

Method for forming a narrow track inductive write head having two-piece pole

A writer for perpendicular recording on bilayer media with suppressed skew angle effect on the width of the recorded track is disclosed. The writer has a wide and flat trailing edge and a narrow leading edge. In a preferred embodiment, the pole has a trapezoidal cross-section. To suppress the skew effect on the width of the recorded track, the slope angle of the pole sides may be greater than the maximum skew angle in a drive.

A two-piece pole for an inductive write head has a first pole piece in the tip region contiguous the gap and confronting the other pole across the gap. The first pole piece has a width defining the gap width of the write head at the air bearing surface. A second pole piece is connected to the first pole piece and extends to the back gap. At least a portion of the second pole piece is connected to the first pole piece and has a width larger than the width of the first pole piece. The second pole piece means has surfaces within the pole tip region that intersect at external corners facing the gap, at least two surfaces of each of these external corners being joined at an obtuse angle so that none of said external corner is a sharp external corner, thereby minimizing fringe fields. In one form, a pole cap between the first and second pole pieces has a trapezoidal configuration forming the obtuse angles.

A thin film head and a method for fabricating the same comprises depositing a first non-magnetic seedlayer on a substrate, forming a bottom portion of a magnetic core on the first non-magnetic seedlayer, depositing a second non-magnetic seedlayer and forming a top portion of the magnetic core on the second non-magnetic seedlayer. A gap comprised of non-magnetic material is formed between the top and bottom portions of the magnetic core. The stability of the thin film head while in a relaxed state and its read performance are significantly improved.

A thin film inductive head comprising a bottom pole, an insulation region fabricated on the bottom pole, a cavity layer formed on the insulation region, the cavity layer containing an aperture, and a top pole deposited on the cavity layer so that the top pole lies substantially in the aperture of the cavity layer and has a height at least partially defined by the depth of the aperture.

A first layer of magnetic material is deposited onto a substrate to form a bottom pole of an inductive transducer. A second layer of magnetic material is plated on the first layer of magnetic material within the pole tip region to form a bottom pole extension. A layer of non-magnetic metal is then plated on the bottom pole extension to form the gap. A third layer of magnetic material is then plated on the gap layer to form the top pole extension. In one form of the invention, a mask is employed to define a good zero throat level surface to the pole tip region.

A servo head in a disk file data storage system includes two servo transducers which are connected so that noise induced by a nearby writing data head cancels. The first servo transducer, mounted on a slider, reads information stored on a servo disk. A second servo transducer, also located on the slider, is connected to the first servo transducer to produce an output signal so that noise signals induced in the first servo transducer by operation of the data transducer tend to be canceled by noise signals induced in the second servo transducer by operation of the data transducer. The two servo transducers are located such that they are closely spaced relative to the size of the servo transducers. The close proximity of the two servo transducers reduces the effect of unequal shielding from noise signals induced in the two servo transducers by the data head.
