Disclosed are moldable polyblends comprising a polyvinyl chloride resin blended with a copolymer of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid moiety and a monomer copolymerizable therewith and an interfacial modifier to form a blend having improved mechanical and physical properties. The dicarboxylic acid copolymer may be with or without rubber modifiers.

Moldable polyblends containing a polyvinyl chloride resin

Disclosed are modable polyblends comprising a polyvinyl chloride resin blended with a copolymer of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid moiety and a monomer copolymerizable therewith and an interfacial modifier to form a blend having improved mechanical and physical porperties. The dicarboxylic acid copolymer may be with or without rubber modifiers.

Ternary blends of polyvinyl chloride

Pellets of a concentrated composition suitable for blending with pellets of styrene-maleic anhydride resins in an extruder are prepared by dispersing an ether having two brominated phenyl groups and a lesser amount of antimony trioxide in a radial block copolymer of about 50% to about 80% vinyl aromatic compound and about 20 to 50% alkadiene, there being from about 10 to about 25% antimony trioxide, from about 30 to about 45% brominated phenyl ether having two brominated phenyl groups and from about 45% to about 55% radial block copolymer, said concentrated composition containing from about 0.05% to about 5% modifiers comprising an antioxidant phenol having sterically hindering alkyl substituents.

Fire retardant concentrate

A styrenic copolymer composition having increased resistance to heat, markedly improved impact resistance and excellent processability for injection molding, extrusion, thermal formability and the like is made by the polymerization of a vinyl aromatic monomer and an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid moiety in the presence of at least two different rubbery additives. At least one, but not all of the rubbery additives consists of a copolymer of from 40 to 95% by weight of a vinyl aromatic monomer and 5 to 60% by weight of a conjugated diene monomer. This admixture permits addition of up to about 40% or more by weight of the total product of the rubbery additives. The properties achieved offer an attractive balance found only in higher priced engineering polymer materials. The polymerization process is preferably continuous and of the free radical type. It is significant that the process affords energy conservation, even though it is adapted to handling higher concentrations of rubbery additives than hitherto found possible.

Heat resistant high impact polymer compositions and method of making same

Thermoplastic molding compositions which comprise a rubber modified styrene-maleic anhydride non-equimolar copolymer and polycarbonate resin are disclosed.

Molding composition comprising modified styrene-maleic anhydride

A molding composition having advantageous toughness and impact resistance is prepared by polymerizing a mixture of styrene and maleic anhydride in the presence of and adapted to incorporate from about 5 to about 25% of a high impact polystyrene containing from about 4 to about 16% rubber, said high impact polystyrene having an average molecular weight which is significantly higher than the average molecular weight of the completed molding composition. The composition is especially useful in molding fiber-reinforced articles. The composition has outstanding toughness when green. That is, hot and freshly molded articles can be removed from the mold with minimized breakage, thus decreasing the amount of scrap arising from the breakage of a green molded item at the time of being ejected and/or removed from a mold. Moreover, the composition is moldable throughout a wide range of conditions and is less sensitive to changes in molding conditions.

Method of preparing styrene-maleic anhydride molding composition

A blend having advantageous toughness and impact resistance is prepared by hot working of a mixture of from about 5 to about 25% of a high impact polystyrene containing from about 4 to about 16% rubber, said high impact polystyrene having an average molecular weight which is significantly higher than the average molecular weight of the hereafter described styrene-maleic anhydride resin and about 95 to 75% of a styrene-maleic anhydride resin containing from about 80 to 94% styrene, from about 5 to 15% maleic anhydride, and from about 1 to about 5% rubber. The blend is especially useful in molding fiber-reinforced articles. The blend has outstanding toughness when green. That is, hot and freshly molded articles can be removed from the mold with minimized breakage, thus decreasing the amount of scrap arising from the breakage of a green molded item at the time of being ejected and/or removed from a mold.
