Prior art roller followers have generally been relatively expensive to produce and provisions have had to be made to deliver pressurized lubricant to bushings which have been used as bearings for the roller. Such roller followers have also been made with partially open apertures for bearings, thus eliminating the need for pressurized lubrication, but in such roller followers there is a tendency for the rollers to fall out of the open apertures. These probelms are solved herein by forming the body (16) and bearing surfaces (26,28) of a roller follower (10) in two parts, an inner structure (20) which supports the bearing surfaces (26,28) and an outer structure (18) which surrounds the inner structure (20) and fastens the entire assembly (10) together. Preferably, the inner structure (20) comprises a pair of half tubular shells (22,24) which fit together and include flanges (40,41) for keeping the roller (12) in contact with the bearing surfaces (26,28). The principal use of such a roller follower (10) is in engines wherein the roller (12 ) contacts a camshaft and an end (44) of the roller follower removed from the roller (12) motivates a push rod against the force of a spring, thus causing the rod to reciprocate.

Self-contained, damped ball bearing assembly

PCT No. PCT/US79/00312 Sec. 371 Date May 10, 1979 Sec. 102(e) Date May 10, 1979, PCT Filed May 10, 1979. Bolts (11) are used to assemble a cylinder head and an engine block. The bolts (11) must be torqued to a preload tension. The tension often decays or relaxes after a time, thus reducing the firm fastening which is desired. A fastening tool (10,10a) of this invention provides for the efficient and closely controlled imposition of a predetermined tension on a stud (13) while simultaneously applying a torque to a nut (15) to rotate and tighten it to maintain such tension. The fastening tool (10,10a) comprises a housing (18,18a) having a fluid-actuated piston (24,24a) reciprocally mounted therein. The piston (24,24a) is adapted for threaded attachment with the stud (13) to imposed a predetermined tension thereon.

Tool for pre-tensioning a fastener

It is desirable to provide a relatively coarse finish at one end of an inner cylindrical wall of a cylinder or a cylinder liner and a relatively finer finish towards another end of said inner cylinder wall. A honing member is provided for rotation and oscillation in contact with the inner cylinder walls. A first section of the honing member has a relatively coarse grit surface and a second section of the honing member has a relatively fine grit surface. The abovementioned oscillation and rotation of such a honing member comprises an improved method for honing a cylindrical wall.

Cylinder liner honing

A heat exchanger having one or more cooling cores connected between an inlet manifold tank and an outlet manifold tank is provided with a resilient element for mounting the cooling cores to the manifold tanks and sealing the connection therebetween. The resilient mounting and sealing element is formed so as to have a strip portion with at least one opening formed therein to receive the tube of a cooling core and a raised lip portion around the strip portion to provide a damped soft mount. The resilient element also includes a grommet portion around the opening which deforms to provide a liquid or fluid-tight seal between the outside of cooling core tubes and the inside of the manifold tank bores which are adapted to receive the tubes.

An exhaust manifold for an internal combustion engine is provided with internal insulation so as to maintain the outside skin temperature preferably below 450.degree. F. The manifold is provided with an exhaust conduit or lining that is comprised of interfitting relatively axially movable sections in contact with the exhaust gases. A low specific gravity or porous sleeve of insulating material is fitted in slightly spaced relationship around the exhaust conduit. The sleeve of insulating material may be wrapped to prevent the metal of the outer cast manifold housing from penetrating the insulation. Each section of the exhaust conduit has a branch for connection to a flanged nipple which is permitted some limited movement relative to the manifold housing when connected to the exhaust ports of the engine.

A differential comprises a pair of face gears, a carrier rotatably mounted between the face gears and a plurality of pinion gears rotatably mounted on the carrier and intermeshing with the face gears for differentially permitting one face gear to rotate relative to the other face gear. The pinion gears are each rotatably mounted in bearings and a lubrication system is provided for pumping lubricating fluid to the bearings for lubrication and cooling purposes. The lubrication system comprises a double-acting pump mounted adjacent to the carrier and a rocker arm pivotally mounted adjacent to each end of the pump. A first end of the rocker arm engages a cam attached to the carrier whereas a second thereof engages an end of a piston rod reciprocably mounted in the pump to pump lubricating fluid to the bearing.

Lubrication means for a torque proportioning differential

An internal combustion engine including at least one cylinder defining a combustion chamber, a piston reciprocal within the cylinder, at least one port in the combustion chamber, a valve within the port and movable between positions opening and closing the port, a camshaft, a valve train operated by the camshaft for moving the valve between the positions, the valve train including a hydraulic valve lifter, an oil supply line for providing oil to the hydraulic valve lifter and a device for at least partially interrupting the supply of oil to the hydraulic valve lifter for predetermined operational conditions of the engine to thereby intentionally induce valve lash into the system at the predetermined operational conditions. At low engine speeds or during cranking for startup, the induced valve lash increases compression to maximize engine efficiency at low speeds or during startup, while at overspeed conditions, prevents valve train separation and/or lifter pumpup to prevent interference between valves and pistons which would damage the engine.

Speed controlled hydraulic lifter for internal combustion engines

An improved spray nozzle for use in, for example, fuel injection systems in internal combustion engines. The nozzle includes an element having a hollow interior in fluid communication with a liquid pressurizing device. At least one slit is located in the element and the sides of the slits are in abutment with each other for liquid pressures within the interior less than a predetermined value. Pressurizatin of the interior results in the sides of the slit being spaced from each other to permit the liquid to flow from the interior to generate a liquid spray pattern.

A differential comprises a pair of face gears, a carrier rotatably mounted between the face gears and a plurality of pinion gears rotatably mounted on the carrier and intermeshing with the face gears for differentially permitting one face gear to rotate relative to the other face gear. The pinion gears are each rotatably mounted in bearings and a lubrication system is provided for pumping lubricating fluid to the bearings for lubrication and cooling purposes. The lubrication system comprises a double-acting pump mounted adjacent to the carrier and a rocker arm pivotally mounted adjacent to each end of the pump. A first end of the rocker arm engages a cam attached to the carrier whereas a second thereof engages an end of a piston rod reciprocably mounted in the pump to pump lubricating fluid to the bearing. The pump comprises a piston slidably mounted on a rod, a pair of retainers secured to the rod and disposed on either side of the piston, and a compression coil spring disposed between each retainer and the piston.

Improved lubrication pump for a torque proportioning differential

An improved thrust bearing particularly suited for use in applications wherein the bearing is subjected to cocking loads in addition to thrust loads. The bearing includes first and second relatively rotatable members with one of the members including a thrust collar. The other of the members includes a groove receiving the thrust collar and a bearing surface is interposed between the thrust collar and the groove. The groove, collar and bearing surface are constructed and arranged such that a clearance between the parts may vary in the radial direction to promote the maintenance of an oil film of uniform thickness when wobbling or cocking loads are applied.

Thrust bearing

A rotary drive assembly wherein a shaft is retained within a pinion against axial displacement therefrom by a projection on the shaft received in an annular recess in the pinion. The projection is forcibly urged axially from one end of the pinion bore therethrough into alignment with the recess whereupon the enlargement effectively locks the shaft to the pinion. Bearing portions may be provided on the shaft to be disposed outwardly of the opposite sides of the pinion for journaling the assembled shaft and pinion in suitable bearings. One bearing portion may be larger than the pinion bore so as to limit the relative movement therebetween. The bearing adapted to journal the larger bearing portion of the shaft is arranged to pass the shaft enlargement freely therethrough during assembly of the shaft to the pinion.

A lubrication pump comprises a housing having a cup-shaped member reciprocally mounted thereon, a rod secured to the member and disposed internally thereof, a piston slidably mounted on the rod to define an expansible working chamber between the piston and the housing, a first check valve for communicating lubricating fluid into the chamber upon upward movement of the piston and a second check valve for communicating pressurized lubricating fluid exteriorly of the pump upon downward movement of the piston. A first coil spring is preferably mounted between the piston and member whereas a second coil spring is preferably mounted between the base of the housing and the piston.

A limited slip differential comprises a pair of face gears operatively connected together for relative rotation by a plurality of pinions each rotatably mounted on a carrier. Each pinion is secured to a shaft having each of its ends rotatably mounted on the carrier by a spherical bearing means for providing a crowned bearing surface area contact upon imposition of loads thereon during differential operation.

A roller follower system for valves, camming devices and the like including a pair of substantially cylindrical follower members each having at least one flat surface machined thereupon. The system includes a one-piece spring material retaining means for preventing the rotation of the roller follower members during reciprocation thereof which retainer means coact with the flat surfaces of the roller follower members and which retainer means require no machining of parts for installation and use other than the roller follower members. The retainer means is generally U-shaped and has bend portions at the distal portions of its legs and reverse bends at the proximal portions of its legs for facilitating its installation and removal.
