A process is described for cleaning and disinfecting a soiled contact lens in a single unit operation. The soiled contact lens is immersed in a cavitation-supporting saline solution which is at ambient temperature. The lens is then subjected to ultrasonic energy which is transmitted through the solution at a frequency of between 62 and 72 kHz and an intensity of between 0.8 and 2.0 watts per ml. of solution. This procedure causes substantially all of the soil to dislodge from the lens before the combined elapsed time and temperature conditions within the solution produce any substantial protein denaturation on the lens. Ultrasonic energy is transmitted continuously through the solution at the same frequency and intensity ranges so that the temperature of the solution does not exceed about 65.degree. C. but the total elapsed period of the ultrasonic energy transmission, not to exceed about 20 minutes, must be sufficient to effect the disinfection of the lens.

Conditioning of goods for subsequent sterilization with a biocidal agent in a sealable chamber includes removal of air, and moistening and heating the goods to the desired temperature levels. Controlled evacuation of the chamber and coordinated admission of conditioning vapor into the chamber provides cyclic variations in chamber pressure between preselected subatmospheric pressures to subject goods in the chamber to a plurality of cyclic subatmospheric pressure pulses. The time required for the cyclic pressure variations is responsive to load characteristics, including heat and moisture absorption characteristics of the goods being conditioned, and is independent of prescribed times or direct measurement of load temperature. The subatmospheric pressure levels are selected based on the temperature-pressure relationship of the conditioning vapor so that chamber temperature during cyclic pulsing does not exceed the desired sterilization temperature.

Apparatus for biocidal sterilization using cyclic subatmospheric

Methods and apparatus for steam sterilization in which goods are conditioned by removing air and heating to a desired temperature in sealable chamber. Pressure change in the chamber is monitored and employed to control conditioning. The goods are subjected to a plurality of controlled cyclic pressure pulses below a predetermined supra-atmospheric pressure level by alternate evacuation and vapor pressurization of the chamber. The cyclic pressure pulsing is made responsive to load characteristics which are determined by monitoring pressure change rate in the chamber. In a specific embodiment, air is flushed from the chamber initially by the injection of steam simultaneously with evacuation; the evacuation phase of each pulse continues until both a predetermined time has lapsed and a predetermined vacuum level has been attained; and, the steam pressurization phase of each pulse is continued until a fixed pressure related to sterilization temperature is reached.

Method of biocidal sterilization using cyclic subatmospheric pressure

Method and apparatus are provided for ultrasonic cleaning and decontaminating, disinfecting, or sterilizing articles, such as surgical instruments, in a single piece of equipment. Energy transmission through a unitized shell wall coupled with deep vacuum conditions in the chamber enables rapid degasification, enhanced cavitation providing effective and efficient ultrasonic cleaning in a sealed vessel capable of carrying out high pressure sterilization. Sonic energy transducers are rigidly mounted externally of the unitized shell to achieve desired cavitation substantially uniformly throughout the volume of the chamber established for placement of articles to be ultrasonically washed and biocidally treated.
