A method for managing refilling a first reservoir of an ambulatory infusion system from a first container that stores a first drug and for managing refilling a second reservoir of the ambulatory infusion system out of a second container that stores a second drug is disclosed. The method includes repeatedly and automatically carrying out a filling volume assessment routine, which involves determining the expected infusion of the first drug and the second drug between the present time tand the end of an estimation time interval tand determining if the first reservoir shall be refilled and/or if the second reservoir shall be refilled at tbased on the expected infusion of the first drug and the second drug determined in step (a). Ambulatory infusion device control units and ambulatory infusion devices that are configured for carrying out such method are also disclosed.

A cannula cartridge for receiving a cannula includes a needle assembly, a cannula and a protector. The needle assembly is movable within the protector between first and second positions. In the first position the needle is covered by the protector and a retainer of the protector engages an engagement element of the needle hub by a form fit connection. In the second position the needle at least partially extends from the protector. An inserter can move the needle assembly between the first position and to the second position and then back to the first position. The retainer and the engagement element are configured such that a holding force of the retainer is overcome by applying forces parallel to the axis of the needle. An inventive kit that includes an inserter and a driver for moving the needle assembly and a method of manufacturing the cannula cartridge are also disclosed.

Disclosed is a medical system having a cartridge and an inserter. The cartridge includes a housing having an interior volume with a first guide within the interior volume. A cradle is disposed within the interior volume and is configured for mounting a medical appliance. The cradle includes a subcutaneous element and an insertion needle. The insertion needle is configured for being actuated to insert the subcutaneous element into a subject. The inserter includes a second guide configured to mate with the housing of the cartridge, and the first guide and second guide are configured to cooperate to guide the inserter into the interior volume along a guiding path defined by the first guide. The inserter is configured to removably attach to the cradle when guided into the interior volume. A memory is provided that contains a drug dosing scheme specifying a desired liquid drug type, and at least one sensor is provided that detects information concerning the type of liquid drug contained in the first and/or second reservoir. A processor receives the information from the at least one sensor and thereby determines the type of liquid drug retained in the first reservoir and/or the second reservoir, and uses the drug dosing scheme and the determined type of liquid drug to operate the drive. A subsystem is received in the sterile container and is configured to be at least partially inserted into a host. The sensor has a measurement chamber plate that receives the sample of bodily fluid and a quantum cascade laser illumination source that generates an illumination light beam in the spectral range and transmits it to the measurement chamber plate. The illumination light beam at least partially illuminates the measurement chamber plate and the measurement chamber plate generates a reflection light beam in response to the illumination by the illumination light beam. The reflection light beam at least partially illuminates the sample of body fluid within the measurement chamber plate. An optical detector detects at least one property of the reflection light beam and generates a sensor signal dependent on the presence of the analyte. A controlled evaluates the sensor signal.
