A carton squaring mechanism in a carrier for effectuating and maintaining a four-sided side-seamed open-topped carton in a squared configuration. The carrier includes a plurality of compartments, wherein adjacent compartments are separated by a pair of spaced-apart, laterally oriented, parallel fixed guides, a first off-center guide secured to one side of the carrier so as to be positioned closely adjacent to one of one pair of parallel guides and perpendicular to the planes of the latter. Each of the fixed guides has downwardly converging lower edges formed thereon for piloting the carton into the compartment. Each carton is first squared by engagement with oppositely disposed side rails, and then maintained square by the above referenced guides.

A bottom end closure for a liquid-carrying paperboard container, wherein particular diagonal and sloped score lines are formed on the inner closure panels by modified sealing jaws, such that, upon being engaged by the sealing jaws, the score lines enhance the formation of a concave shape to the bottom end closure. The result is that the filled container will sit flat and stand erect, without any interfering downward bulging.

A mechanism for transferring a pair of side-by-side cartons from one processing station to another, and accompanying device(s) for detecting any jam-up during the transfer, should one occur for any reason. One embodiment includes a photoelectric unit, a vacuum sensor, and a strobe signal for timing and detecting the presence of both signals to shut down the machine if either signal is abnormal. Another embodiment includes a second strobe signal for use as a back-up for the first strobe, or in lieu thereof, for timing and detecting the photoelectric signal only.

Transfer mechanism with jam detector

An apparatus and method adaptable to a double indexing forming, filling and sealing machine for packaging liquid products in cartons, associated with the filling and top forming and sealing units for displacing with nitrogen the oxygen normally present in the headspace of the filled cartons. The apparatus includes a housing having a covered chamber and open bottom, with a diffuser screen and pairs of baffle arrangements therein for directing the nitrogen downwardly and forwardly into the leading carton of an aligned pair of filled but open-topped cartons, and downwardly and rearwardly into the trailing carton of the pair prior to sealing the end closures thereof.

Apparatus for packaging in a protective atmosphere

This disclosure illustrates and describes an electronic program control for controlling the filling operation for cartons supplied by one turret mechanism having a plurality of equally spaced mandrels to a compartmented conveyor which carries the cartons in pairs beneath a pair of filler nozzles. The electronic program control includes the switches, AND gates, shift registers and flip flops required to assure that, in the event a carton is missing for any reason from a conveyor compartment, the appropriate filler nozzle will not be actuated.
