Shaft plugs for golf clubs and methods to manufacture golf clubs

A method of manufacturing a golf club head having a face insert that is mechanically isolated from the body of the club head involves inserting a face insert into a cavity formed in the body. The face insert is suspended above a bottom wall of the cavity by tabs that rest on the front face of the body. A curable liquid material, such as polyurethane, is injected between the face insert and the cavity. Once the polyurethane is cured, the tabs are machined off leaving a striking surface on the face insert that is flush with the front face of the body. Since the only part of the face insert that was in contact with the body is removed during the machining operation, the face insert is completely isolated from the body by the cured polyurethane.

An apparatus for positioning and holding a golf club for installation of a golf club grip comprises a shaft cradle, a shaft clamp and a positioning device. The positioning device comprises a platen that is moveable toward and away from the axis of the golf club shaft when the golf club shaft is positioned in the apparatus. Mounted to the platen are a fixed stop and an opposing moveable ram. The fixed stop has a stop surface that is adapted to engage the face of the club so that as the opposing moveable ram presses the golf club head against the fixed stop, the face will assume an orientation flush against the surface of the fixed stop, thus aligning the club face with the stop surface. The entire platen assembly is moveable toward and away from the axis of the golf club shaft so as to accommodate golf clubs having different offsets. The shaft clamp holds the golf club in position once the club face is aligned and an indicator device provides a visual alignment reference for aligning the grips during installation.

Golf club grip alignment apparatus and method

An apparatus for receiving a golf club and positioning the head of the club and holding it in a predetermined position and providing a visual indication of that position at a location proximate the extending end of the golf club shaft so that an installer can properly align a grip that is to be installed on the shaft of the club. The apparatus includes a golf club holding mechanism, a club head positioning device, a club head position indicator, an aligner mechanism and a circuit by which the installer controls and monitors the operation of the apparatus.
