The invention is related to a cost-effective method for making a coated contact lens having a hydrogel coating thereon. A method of the invention involves heating a contact lens precursor having carboxylic acid groups on and/or near its surface in an aqueous solution in the presence of a hydrophilic copolymer that comprises monomeric units of (a) at least one epoxy-containing vinylic monomer, (b) at least one amino-containing vinylic monomer having a primary or secondary amino group, (c) at least one polyethyleneglycol-containing vinylic monomer, and (d) at least one phosphorylcholine-containing vinylic monomer, at a temperature from about 100° C. to about 140° C. for at least 30 minutes, thereby forming a hydrogel coating on the contact lens precursor. Such a method can be advantageously implemented directly in a sealed lens package during autoclave.

Contact lens with a hydrogel coating thereon

The invention provides a delamination-resistant embedded silicone hydrogel contact lens having an insert that is embedded in a silicone hydrogel bulk material. The insert is made of a crosslinked polymeric material having a refractive index higher than that of the silicone hydrogel bulk material by at least 0.07 and comprises a diffractive structure disposed on one of the front and back curve surfaces of the insert for providing a diffractive power that contributes to the overall optical power of the contact lens.

The invention provides a class of hydrophilized polydiorganosiloxane vinylic crosslinkers. Each of the hydrophilized polydiorganosiloxane vinylic crosslinkers of the invention comprise (1) a polydiorganosiloxane segment comprising dimethylsiloxane units and hydrophilized siloxane units each having one methyl substituent and one organic substituent having a phosphorylcholine moiety; (2) ethylenically-unsaturated groups. The invention also provides a silicone hydrogel contact lens, which comprises a crosslinked polymeric material comprising repeating units of at least one of such a class of hydrophilized polydiorganosiloxane vinylic crosslinkers. The invention further provides a method of producing a hydrophilized contact lens from a polymerizable composition comprising at least one of such a class of hydrophilized polydiorganosiloxane vinylic crosslinkers.

Hydrophilized polydiorganosiloxane vinylic crosslinkers

The invention provides a class of high RI polysiloxane vinylic crosslinkers. Each of the polysiloxane vinylic crosslinkers of the invention comprise (1) a polysiloxane segment comprising dimethylsiloxane units and aryl-containing siloxane units each having one methyl substituent and one organic substituent having up to 45 carbon atoms and at least one aryl moiety which is linked to Si atom through a linker having at least 2 (preferably 3) carbon atoms; (2) ethylenically-unsaturated groups. The invention also provides an insert or silicone hydrogel contact lens which comprises a crosslinked polymeric material comprising repeating units of at least one of such a class of high RI polysiloxane vinylic crosslinkers.

The invention provides a hydrophilized polydiorganosiloxane vinylic crosslinker which comprises (1) a polydiorganosiloxane polymer chain comprising dimethylsiloxane units and hydrophilized siloxane units each having one methyl substituent and one monovalent C-Corganic radical substituent having two to six hydroxyl groups, wherein the molar ratio of the hydrophilized siloxane units to the dimethylsiloxane units is from about 0.035 to about 0.15, and (2) two terminal (meth)acryloyl groups. The hydrophilized polydiorganosiloxane vinylic crosslinker has a number average molecular weight of from about 3000 Daltons to about 80,000 Daltons. The present invention is also related to a silicone hydrogel contact lens, which comprises repeating units derived from a hydrophilized polydiorganosiloxane vinylic crosslinker of the invention.

Hydrophilized polydiorganosiloxane vinylic crosslinkers and uses thereof

Described herein is a method for producing a contact lens comprising a central zone that has a diameter of about 13 mm or less, is concentric with the central axis of the contact lens, and possesses at least one photo functionality. The method comprises: applying a first polymerizable fluid composition containing at least one photochemically functional compound on a central portion of the molding surface of a female mold half to form a circular layer; partially curing, in situ, the circular layer in the female mold half; dispensing a second polymerizable fluid composition over the partially-cured circular layer on the molding surface of the female mold half; and a step of curing the second polymerizable fluid composition and the partially-cured circular layer immersed therein in the mold cavity formed between the the molding surfaces of the female mold half and a male mold half.

Method for making photofunctional contact lenses

Described herein is a cost-effective and time-efficient method for producing photochromic contact lenses, in particular, preferably photochromic silicone hydrogel contact lenses, from a polymerizable composition comprising an unique selection and combination of main polymerizable components, a photochromic compound and a visible-light photoinitiator, based on the Lightstream Technology™. This invention also provides photochromic contact lenses or more preferably photochromic silicone hydrogel contact lenses made according to a method of the invention. A photochromic contact lens of the invention is capable of undergoing a reversible color change upon exposure to UV-irradiation or high-energy-violet light (HEVL) (with wavelengths from 380 nm to 440 nm).

Method for making photochromic contact lenses

The present invention generally relates to inherently wettable silicone hydrogel contact lenses having relatively high oxygen permeability, relatively high equilibrium water content and relatively low elastic modulus. The present invention is also related to a method for making such inherently wettable silicone hydrogel contact lenses.

Silicone hydrogel contact lenses

The invention is related to a class of hydrophilic poly(meth)acrylamide-based copolymers each comprising dangling (i.e., pendant) reactive chains each terminated with a carboxyl group groups and at least 50% by mole of (meth)acrylamide repeating units relative to all repeating units of the hydrophilic poly(meth)acrylamide-based copolymer. The hydrophilic copolymers have a relatively high affinity to a base coating of a polyanionic polymer on a medical device or contact lens and are highly reactive towards azetidinium groups of an azetidinium-containing polymer upon heating. They can find particular use in producing water-soluble highly-branched hydrophilic polymeric material and in producing water gradient contact lenses.
