1-Acryloyl-3-(substituted)phenyl ureas have been found to be highly effective as fungicides when incorporated into or applied to agricultural media, plastics, paints or the like.

The biocidal activity of N-(2-methyl-1-naphthyl)-maleimide is vastly improved by chelating it with an amine wherein each free hydrogen on each amino group has been replaced by the groups --(CH.sub.2).sub.n COOY wherein n represents 1 or 2 and each Y represents hydrogen, ammonium or an alkali metal cation.

By the addition of a relatively small amount of N-(acenaphthenyl)maleimides carrying optional substituents, synthetic films, plastics, woven or knitted synthetic or cellulosic fabrics, or paint can be protected against fungal and bacterial deterioration.

N-(2-Methyl-1-naphthyl)-maleimide

N-Phenoxyphenyl or N-phenylthiophenyl maleimides or 2,3-dichloromaleimides carrying optional substituents in the phenyl rings are potent biocides capable of protecting fabrics and plastics from fungal or bacterial attacks.

By the addition of a relatively small amount of N-(phenoxyphenyl)maleimide or the corresponding 3,4-dichloromaleimide, synthetic films or plastics or woven or knitted synthetic or cellulosic fabrics can be protected against fungal and bacterial deterioration.

Industrial biocide

4-Tolyl diiodomethyl sulfone has been found to protect leather from fungal attack if it is incorporated into the tanning mixture in suitable amounts.
