A flexible method of controlling the thickness of a material ribbon, in particular a glass ribbon, as well as an apparatus to implement such a method. To this end, a material in a heated and softened state is drawn into a ribbon and is then cooled down. During the forming process during which the ribbon is formed and drawn, the material is heated. During the forming process thermal energy at least partially in the form of thermal radiation that is emitted from a surface of a heated heating element. that is located opposite the material, is supplied to the material. Heating of heating element occurs at least partially through the energy of a laser beam that is directed onto heating element, thereby locally heating the heating element.

Method and apparatus for thickness control of a material ribbon

A method for the production of glass components, an apparatus for carrying out the method, and a glass component that is obtainable through the method are provided. The method is a drawing method wherein a forming zone of a preform is heated to a temperature that allows drawing of the glass. The method includes a forming zone of the preform that is very small. Thereby the width of the preform is decreased to a smaller extent than its thickness. The glass components that can be obtained by this method have very smooth surfaces.

Method for the production of glass components

A method for controlling the thickness of a glass ribbon and an article produced thereby are provided. The method includes: providing a glass ribbon by drawing from a melt or redrawing from a preform; predefining a nominal thickness of the glass ribbon; determining the thickness of the glass ribbon over its entire net width; determining at least one deviation of the thickness of the glass ribbon from the predefined nominal thickness; identifying the area of the thickness deviation in the glass ribbon; and heating the area of the at least one thickness deviation in the glass ribbon using a laser, so that the glass ribbon attains the predefined thickness.

Method for controlling the thickness of a substrate

A redrawing method for the production of thin glasses is provided that allows redraw of high refractive index optical glasses. The includes the steps of providing a vitreous preform with a mean width B, a mean thickness D, and a refractive index nof at least 1.68 in a redrawing device, heating at least a part of the preform, redrawing of the preform to a thin glass with a mean width b and a mean thickness d. The heated part of the preform exhibits, for the duration of at most 30 minutes, a temperature above a lower limit of devitrification of the glass. The glass of the preform exhibits a dependence of the viscosity on the temperature, which is characterized by a mean decrease of the viscosity with increasing temperature in an viscosity range of 10to 10dPas of at least 3*10dPas/K.

Method of production of high-refractive thin glass substrates

A drawing method for glass is described. The method provides glass components that have a strongly increased ratio of width to thickness when compared to the preform, which makes the manufacturing of flat glass components more economical. The method purposefully controls the temperature distribution within the preform.

Method for redrawing of glass

A method for producing a glass film is provided. The method includes: heating a portion of a glass preform so that in the heated portion the glass has a viscosity of less than 10dPa&#xb7;s, or drawing a glass from a melt; withdrawing the glass using a drawing device, wherein in case of drawing from a preform the drawn glass film is thinner than the glass preform; heating at least one point by means of a laser, the point being located in an edge region of the drawn glass film that is being formed by withdrawing the glass, wherein at the site of the laser focus the glass has a viscosity of not more than 10dPa&#xb7;s before the laser is switched on and wherein heating is performed in such a manner that at least one notch is provided in parallel to the drawing direction.

Method for production of glass components

In the method of making a monocrystalline or polycrystalline semiconductor material semiconductor raw material is introduced into a melting crucible and directionally solidified using a vertical gradient freeze method. The molten material trickles downward, so that the raw material that has not yet melted gradually slumps in the melting crucible. The semiconductor raw material is replenished from above onto a zone of semiconductor raw material which has not yet melted or is not completely melted to at least partly compensate for shrinkage of the raw material and to raise the filling level. To reduce the melting time and influence the thermal conditions in the system as little as possible, the semiconductor raw material to be replenished is heated to a temperature below its melting temperature and introduced into the crucible in the heated state.

Method for producing a monocrystalline or polycrystalline semiconductor material

The glass fiber for an optical amplifier has a matrix glass core, a first glass cladding, and a second glass cladding. The matrix glass core has a composition, in mol %, of BiO, 30-60; SiO, 0.5-40; BO, 0.5-40; AlO, 0-30; GaO, 0-20; GeO, 0-25 ; LaO, 0-15; NbO, 0-10; SnO, 0-30; alkali metal oxides, 0-40; and ErO, 0.05-8. The glass claddings have the same composition as the core, except that a transition metal compound is included as an absorbent. The refraction index of the matrix glass is &#x3e; about 1.85, the refraction index of the first glass cladding is less than that of the core, and the refraction index of the second glass cladding is higher than that of the first.

The method of making globular or spherical bodies of optical quality includes filling receptacles () in a heat-resistant support () made of a porous material with glass gobs (); conducting gas through the heat-resistant support so that a gas flow () passes through the support in a direction () opposite to a direction in which gravity acts; heating the heat-resistant support () to a temperature at which the glass gobs () have a viscosity of up to about 10poise; maintaining the support () at this temperature for a predetermined time interval; and then cooling the support () to ambient temperature while continuing to provide the gas flow () through the support ().

Method for making globular bodies

The double crucible for a glass drawing method has a heatable outer crucible () and an inner crucible () surrounded by the outer crucible (), which is heatable separately from the outer crucible (). Both crucibles () have an outlet nozzle () for the glass to be drawn. To make glass fibers from heavy metal oxide glass (HMO-glass) with higher quality and comparatively simple crucible features, the outlet nozzle () of the outer crucible () extends a certain distance beyond the outlet nozzle () of the inner crucible (). Surfaces of the outlet nozzles coming in contact with the glass melt are polished and are provided on a material, which has a reducing action on heavy metal glass in the melt in all cases. These surfaces also have sufficient mechanical strength for and chemical inertness to heavy metal oxide glass.
