A communication system provides PSTN access to a user device coupled to a packet network over a packet connection. The user device exchanges telephony signaling and telephony communications in an analog format with an analog telephone, exchanges the telephony signaling and the telephony communications in the packet format over the packet connection, and exchanges Internet communications over the packet connection. A service node exchanges the telephony signaling in the packet format with the user device, processes the telephony signaling to select a PSTN connection, transfers a control message indicating the PSTN connection, and exchanges the telephony signaling in a PSTN format with the PSTN. An interworking unit receives the control message, and in response, exchanges the telephony communications in the packet format with the user device and exchanges the telephony communications in the PSTN format with the selected PSTN connection.

Telecommunications system to provide analog telephony communications over a packet connection

Apparatus and methods for transferring audio between a headset and electronic equipment over an optical link. The apparatus includes an electro-optical interface for electrically connecting to the electronic equipment, an optical link, and an electro-optical headset. Audio from the electronic equipment modulates a light source in the electro-optical interface. A modulated light signal is transmitted through the optical link to the electro-optical headset where it is demodulated and reproduced as the original audio in the ear of a user wearing the headset. Also, another audio from the user's mouth produces another modulated light signal in the electro-optical headset. The other modulated light signal is transmitted through the optical link to the electro-optical interface where it is demodulated to provide the other audio to the electronic equipment. The non-electrical optical link may improve audible communications between the electronic equipment and the headset in radio-frequency noisy environments. Also, the non-electrical optical link may prevent coupling with an aerial of the electronic equipment and improve radio propagation.

Optically coupled headset and microphone

The invention is a residential communication hub for a communication system that provides communications services to an end-user. The residential hub is connected to the communications system over a DSL connection. The residential hub converts voice traffic to ATM for transmission over the DSL connection. The communications system includes broadband networks and a service node to facilitate communications services for the end-user.

User communication hub for use with an analog phone line

According to the invention, a method and apparatus are disclosed for providing multiline telephonic and data services over a single access facility. In one embodiment of the present invention, a wall unit is located at a customer premises which terminates a single analog phone line and adaptively encodes using Voice over Internet Protocol technology and multiplexes a plurality of telephonic and data calls over the single analog phone line. A corresponding gateway server (or a plurality of gateway servers), which supports one or a plurality of wall unit calls, is located in the public switched telephone network ('PSTN'), or possibly in a private telephone network. The gateway server communicates with one or more active wall units to extract one or more telephonic and data calls from the analog signal produced from a wall unit, and to appropriately route the telephonic calls over the PSTN and the data packets over the Internet or to other data services. The telephonic and data devices connected to the wall unit are each assigned individual virtual phone numbers by the provider of the service embodying this invention. To reach one of these devices, its respective virtual telephone number is used. The virtual phone numbers are published across the PSTN and therefore can be reached from anywhere on the PSTN. In another embodiment, virtual phone numbers are not required, as phone calls destined for subscribed telephone number are automatically routed through the gateway server.

Method and apparatus for simultaneous multiline phone and data services over a single access facility

The invention is a communications system that provides communications services to an end-user. The system includes a residential hub that is connected to the communications system over a DSL connection. The residential hub converts voice traffic to ATM for transmission over the DSL connection. The communications system includes an asynchronous communication system that is connected to a POTS system. The asynchronous communication system converts the ATM transmission to a PSTN format and transfers the PSTN format to the POTS system.

Telecommunications system

The invention comprises a series of architectures that are implemented in four phases to provide a migration path from an initial ATM service offering to a full service ATM network. The initial ATM network includes several metropolitan ATM networks that are interconnected by a core ATM network. Each metropolitan ATM network includes a service node that controls ATM network elements to deliver services. In Phase I, a business hub that is connected to the metropolitan ATM network integrates voice, data, and Internet traffic over a single ATM connection that contains permanent Virtual Connections (PVCs) to various destinations, such as other business hubs, a gateway to local and long distance networks, the Internet, a frame relay network. In Phase II, the architecture is extended to smaller business markets. Businesses are provided with the PVC-based ATM service using xDSL/ATM connections that are multiplexed at a central office and then provided to the service node over the metropolitan ATM network. A remote dial-in feature is also added. In Phase III, a work-at-home hub is provided for telecommuting. The work-at-home hub uses an xDSL/ATM connection through the central office to the service node. Phase III also includes the deployment of a session manager and provider agents that interact to interpret user requests and establish the requisite communications paths using Switched Virtual Connections (SVCs). The business can replace existing some or all PVC-based service with more efficient SVC-based service. In Phase IV, the architecture is extended to the residential market. A residential hub is provided for residential communications over an xDSL/ATM connection through the central office to the service node. An analog hub is provided for conventional telephone service through the service node.

Asynchronous transfer mode architecture migration

The invention is an ATM communications system that provides the option of advanced communications services or conventional telephone service to the customer. Advantageously, the ATM communications system does not require the widespread deployment of class 5 telephone switches to provide telephone service. A residential communications hub is located at a residence and communicates with the telephones at the residence using the analog telephony format. The residential communications hub converts between the analog telephony format and the ATM format. The residential communications hub is connected to a DSL mux by telephone wiring that carries the ATM/DSL format. The residential communications hub and the DSL mux communicate using the ATM/DSL format. The DSL mux converts between the ATM/DSL format and the ATM/SONET format. The DSL mux is connected to the an ATM switch by a broadband connection that carries the ATM/SONET format. The DSL mux and the ATM switch communicate using the ATM/SONET format. The ATM switch establishes ATM communications paths for the telephone service. A telephony hub is connected to telephones by telephone wiring that carries the analog telephony format. The telephony hub communicates with the telephones using the analog telephony format. The telephony hub is connected to the ATM switch by a broadband connection that carries the ATM/SONET format. The telephony hub and the ATM switch communicate using the ATM/SONET format.
