The present invention relates to a method for regenerating exhaust-gas aftertreatment systems capable of storing nitrogen oxides in lean exhaust gas, and in rich exhaust gas of reducing nitrogen oxides to nitrogen. The invention is used in exhaust-gas aftertreatment systems which consist of at least one NOx storage catalyst arranged near the engine and at least one NOx storage catalyst located in the underbody of the vehicle and are intended to clean the exhaust gas of spark-ignition engines predominantly run on a lean mixture.

Regeneration method for exhaust-gas aftertreatment systems

The present invention is directed to a catalyst system for the reduction of the harmful exhaust-gas constituents hydrocarbons (THC), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO), and the environmentally detrimental secondary emissions ammonia (NH) and nitrous oxide (NO) of combustion engines operated using gasoline and to a corresponding method for exhaust-gas purification. The system is characterized by a particular arrangement of catalysts and is used in the case of engines which are operated with predominantly, on average, stoichiometric air/fuel mixtures. Here, a three-way catalyst produced in accordance with the current prior art is preferably installed in a close-coupled position. In the underfloor position, there is situated an SCR catalyst produced in accordance with the current prior art, followed by a further three-way catalyst produced in accordance with the current prior art. The three-way catalyst in the underfloor region furthermore has a lower oxygen-storing capacity than the close-coupled three-way catalyst.

The present invention relates to the use of different regeneration strategies for nitrogen oxide storage catalysts (NOx storage catalyst, LNT or NSC), depending on the exhaust gas temperatures, to reduce in the total exhaust gas the greenhouse gas NO (nitrous oxide) that is produced as a secondary emission during the regeneration of the storage catalyst. If the exhaust gas temperature is below 275&#xb0; C.-290&#xb0; C., regeneration takes place using a strategy with short pulses of around 2 seconds and &#x3bb; Lambda 0.95 rich.
