A gas laser includes a control to modify the distribution of the intensity of the laser light over the laser beam cross section produced in the lasing gas within at least one laser tube by at least two electrodes and a voltage supply unit by means of which a voltage can be fed to electrodes. A discharge area forms in the lasing gas and this can be affected by adjusting the amplification profile of the laser over the excitation cross section of the laser tube.

A device for capacitive coupling of HF energy to a laser section has a capacitor situated in the input line, first and second capacitor electrodes, a dielectric situated between them and first and second cooled contact electrodes embracing a dielectric laser tube. The first cooled contact electrode has a surface with a partial region that comprises the first capacitor electrode. A dielectric foil is situated on the partial region and forms the dielectric of the capacitor. And an electric conducting web is situated on the foil and forms the second capacitor electrode.

Device for coupling HF energy to lasers

A high frequency cross-flow gas laser has a tubular conduit divided into a multiplicity of gas flow sections with gas inlets adjacent each of the mirrors therein and outlets therebetween. A pair of electrodes is provided along each flow section to produce a high frequency electrical discharge in the lasing gas mixture, and a cooler is used to chill the gas withdrawn from the conduit for recycling thereto. The electrode pairs are desirably radially rotated relative to one another to produce uniformity of the energy discharge across the cross-section of the lasing gas mixture.
