An antimicrobial composition containing an alcohol having 3 to 6 carbon atoms which effectively increases antimicrobial activity and particularly a mouthwash composition that is useful in the prevention and reduction of bad breath, plaque and related gum diseases having an antimicrobially effective amount of one or more active essential oils; from about 0.01% to about 30.0% v/v of an alcohol having 3 to 6 carbon atoms; optionally, ethanol; at least one surfactant; and water. The actives not only provide enhanced efficacy but are completely solubilized, thus providing an aesthetically appealing product.

Antimicrobial composition containing a C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alcohol

A pleasant-tasting, substantially alcohol-free oral mouthwash composition is effective in eliminating the bacteria and other oral microflora responsible for the production of plaque, periodontitis, gingivitis, gum disease and bad breath. The composition consists of a unique blend of the essential oils thymol or eucalyptol, methyl salicylate, menthol and tripartite blend of peppermint flavor oils that are dissolved in solution using a non-ionic surfactant blend.

Alcohol free mouthwash

Antacid pharmaceutical compositions provide optimal buffering profiles of from 3.0 to 5.0 for immediate and long lasting relief from the symptoms of acid indigestion, sour stomach, heartburn and gas. The composition may comprise a dual or tripartite combination of the actives calcium carbonate, calcium or magnesium citrate and/or calcium phosphate which, as a result of their different activities, neutralize the excess stomach acid both immediately and continuously over time. The formulations also provide the individual with alternative dosage forms which may provide greater levels of calcium, less sodium and less production of gastrointestinal gas.

Antacid pharmaceutical composition

Reduced alcohol antiseptic mouthwash compositions are achieved which have the same oral antimicrobial efficacy, clarity and taste as higher alcohol level compositions. Availability of the active ingredients is best maintained by increasing the levels of surfactant employed in the composition together with the addition of two co-solvents, propylene glycol and glycerin. Propylene glycol with artificial sweetener(s), or propylene glycol alone with corresponding increases in the levels of surfactant are only marginally acceptable.
