A two-stage process for producing indoanilines includes oxidizing in a first stage a paraphenylene diamine to a quinone diimine and in a second stage condensing the said quinone diimine with a phenolic compound. The resulting indoanilines can be incorporated into a dye composition for keratinous fibers, especially, human hair.

Process for producing indoanilines and keratin fiber dye composition

This invention pertains to compounds suitable for dyeing keratin fibers, especially human hair. The compounds have the formula: ##STR1## or an acid addition salt thereof, in which formula R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 form, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are bonded, a morpholino or piperidino ring and R represents a hydrogen atom. This invention also pertains to compositions for dyeing keratin fibers, especially human hair, such composition containing the compounds set forth above and/or compounds of formula (I) wherein R.sub.1 represents a hydrogen atom, R.sub.2 represents a tetrahydrofurfuryl or methoxyethyl radical and R represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl radical, or an acid addition salt thereof. The invention also pertains to the method of using these compositions.

2,4-Dihydroxydiphenylamines and hair dyeing compositions and method

New dyestuffs are described for keratinic fibers which produce particularly luminous shades without the need for an oxidizing agent. Indoaniline of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy; R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 represent alkyl; R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 each independently represent hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, acylamino, ureido or carbalkoxyamino and R.sub.5 can also represent amino, alkylmaino, hydroxy alkylamino or carbamylalkylamino, the alkyl and alkoxy groups above being able to contain 1 to 6 carbon atoms and the acyl group from 2 to 7 carbon atoms with the condition that R.sub.5 does not represent hydrogen, chlorine, methyl or methoxy and when R.sub.5 represents acetylamino, R.sub.6 does not represent hydrogen; it being understood that the above compounds can be present in the tautomeric form of that represented by formula (I). The indoaniline is usefully employed in dye copositions for keratinic fibers, especially living human hair.

Diphenylamine which is N-monosubstituted in the 4'-position carries at least one acylamino group at the 2- or 6-position. The diphenylamine is usefully employed in a composition for dyeing keratinic fibers.

Diphenylamine of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.4 each independently represent a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, amino, lower alkyl amino, acylamino, lower carbamylalkyl amino, lower hydroxyalkyl amino, lower carbalkoxy amino and ureido; R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 each independently represent a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, acylamino and ureido; R.sub.5 represents a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl and lower alkoxy; R.sub.6 represents a member selected from the group consisting of lower hydroxyalkyl, lower amino alkyl, lower acylamino alkyl, lower mesylamino alkyl, lower carbamylalkyl, lower sulfoalkyl, lower piperidinoalkyl, lower morpholinoalkyl, lower mono alkyl lower amino alkyl and lower dialkyl lower amino alkyl; and R.sub.7 represents a member selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl, lower hydroxyalkyl, lower aminoalkyl, lower acylamino alkyl, lower mesylamino alkyl, lower carbamyl alkyl, lower sulfoalkyl, lower piperidinoalkyl, lower morpholinoalkyl, lower monoalkyl lower amino alkyl and lower dialkyl lower amino alkyl, each of said alkyl and alkoxy moieties containing 1-6 carbon atoms and each of said acyl moieties representing R--CO-- wherein R is selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic and aromatic group. The said diphenylamine is usefully employed in a dye composition for dyeing keratinic fibers.

4,4'-Disubstituted diphenylamines and the use thereof in dye composition

Indoaniline of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy; R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 represent alkyl; R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 each independently represent hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, acylamino, ureido or carbalkoxyamino and R.sub.5 can also represent amino, alkylamino, hydroxyalkylamino or carbamylalkylamino, the alkyl and alkoxy groups above being able to contain 1 to 6 carbon atoms and the acyl group from 2 to 7 carbon atoms with the condition that R.sub.5 does not represent hydrogen, chlorine, methyl or methoxy and when R.sub.5 represents acetylamino, R.sub.6 does not represent hydrogen; it being understood that the above compounds can be present in the tautomeric form of that represented by formula (I). The indoaniline is usefully employed in dye compositions for keratinic fibers, especially living human hair.

A hair dye composition comprising at least one oxidation dye and at least one diphenylamine of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.4 each independently represent hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl having 1-6 carbon atoms, lower alkoxy having 1-6 carbon atoms, acylamino or ureido;

Diphenylamines of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each independently represent hydrogen, halogen or lower alkyl containing 1-4 carbon atoms with at least one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 being other than hydrogen; R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, and R.sub.7 each independently represent hydrogen or lower alkyl optionally substituted with hydroxy, carbamyl, piperidinyl or acylamino; R.sub.3 and R.sub.6 or R.sub.4 and R.sub.7 also optionally forming together with the carbon and nitrogen atoms to which they are attached, a dihydrooxazine or pyrroline heterocycle; and Z represents amino, acylamino or hydroxy; and the acid salts of said diphenylamines. These diphenylamines are usefully employed in cosmetic compositions for the hair including hair dye compositions and hair setting lotion compositions.
