The method according to the invention allows modelling of oil and the retention phenomenon in the source rock. Organic matter characterization experiments are used to establish the molecular model (MM) of the initial sample. The thermal cracking reaction of this molecular model is reproduced by dynamic molecular simulation computations with a reactive force field and validated by comparison with experimental data. The reaction mechanism permits a kinetic study by variation of the temperature parameter. The successive phase equilibrium assessments at various progress stages of the cracking reaction allow following the physicochemical evolution of the thermal maturation of the organic sample. The free hydrocarbons are not retained in the solid residue can be quantified throughout numerical modelling of the sample maturation.

Method of quantifying hydrocarbon formation and retention in a source rock

Method of determining the compositional evolution of fluids present in a porous medium as a result of biodegradation. A biodegradation compositional scheme is defined from twelve chemical classes allowing the hydrocarbons and the gases resulting from biodegradation to be described. The initial amount of each one of these chemical classes contained in the fluids before biodegradation is determined. A reaction scheme is then defined for biodegradation, wherein the chemical classes react with electron acceptors according to parallel reactions having different velocities, and each class reacts with these acceptors according to sequential reactions. The biodegradation reaction velocities are determined for each class. The composition of the fluids is then deduced by assessing the amount of each chemical class by applying the reaction scheme. The composition of the biodegraded hydrocarbons, as well as the amount of acid gas and of methane produced, are notably deduced. Application: notably petroleum reservoir development.

Method of predicting changes in the chemical composition of a reservoir oil as a result of biodegradation

At least one type of carbon material susceptible to generate a gas G is selected. Then, a model is built from the carbon isotopic composition of a gas P generated by thermal degradation of this type of carbon material. The model is calibrated by calibrating the kinetic effect independently of the precursor effect. In order to achieve that, pyrolyses are performed on compounds modeling the type of carbon material, said compounds being synthesized and labeled withC. Using said model, a carbon isotopic composition of gas P generated is estimated. Finally, it is determined whether gas G has been generated from the selected type of carbon material, by comparing a measured isotopic composition of gas G to the estimated isotopic composition.

Method for determining a gas compositional origin from carbon material thermal degradation

A device useful for heating of samples taken in small amounts, comprising a sample holding rod engaging in a tubular liner while leaving a reduced dead or wasted space. The rod has an elongate cavity opening at its upper part and receiving the sample which is in contact with a vector gas. The sample holding rod has two positions one of which places the sample in a moderate temperature zone and the other of which places the sample in a heating zone.
