Methods for reducing power required for transmitting a signal from a first transceiver to a second transceiver are described. The methods comprise the steps of estimating an excess amount of power used by the first transceiver for transmitting the signal, reducing the first transceiver's power use by the excess amount of power to a reduced power level, and transmitting the signal from the first transceiver using the reduced power level. The reduced power level achieves a transmission rate of the signal within a predefined tolerance of its preferable rate.

Apparatus and method of loop and rate dependent power cutback

Combined plain old telephone system (POTS) and digital subscriber loop (DSL) line card capable of suppressing low frequency transients. The line card includes the following elements. A DSL receive path receives DSL data from a loop. A POTS receive path receives POTS data from the loop. A combined POTS and DSL transmit path transmits POTS and DSL data to the loop. An impedance generator is coupled between the POTS receive path and the combined POTS and DSL transmit path for synthesizing impedance for signals in the combined POTS and DSL transmit path. A low frequency detector selectively applies a high pass filter to an output of the impedance generator for filtering the low frequency transients. Further, a clipped signal detector and a variable pole high pass filter are provided in the POTS receive path. The clipped signal detector in the POTS receive path triggers a switch that discharges stored transient energy in the receive path. The variable pole high pass filter in the POTS receive path is modified during ringing and hook switch activity, by the line card controller, in order to attenuate transient signals.

Method and apparatus for transient suppression in an integrated POTS/DSL line card

A system and method for reducing peak to average power ratio (PAR) in single and multi-carrier transmitters while accounting for the effect of the transmit filters without significantly affecting a requisite transmission Power Spectral Density (PSD) mask. To this end, in a multicarrier communication system, a DSL transmitter is provided that transmits a multicarrier symbol having a controlled peak-to-average power ratio (PAR) and which is a function of a plurality of information signals. The transmitter has a power reducer that reduces the PAR of the multicarrier symbol by modifying a selected information signal of a plurality of information signals, the modified signal including an information component, a peak reduction component, and a transmission channel response component.

A telephone line feed circuit for use with a telecommunication line has dual drivers with differing ratio transformer taps and a sensing circuit so that under normal drive conditions a first driver supplies substantially all power through a first transformer of a first turns ratio under normal in put signal conditions and a second driver supplies substantially all power through a second transformer of a second turns ratio under high crest factor input signal conditions.
