Control process for twin-roll continuous casting, in which, during casting, the roll separation force (RSF) is measured and the position of the bearings of at least one of the rolls is varied in order to increase or decrease the center-to-center spacing of the rolls, with a view to keeping the force substantially constant, a band (.DELTA.RSF) of force values bracketing a desired nominal force (RSF.sub.0) is predetermined and the position of the bearings is varied more sharply when the value of the measured force lies outside the band than when it lies within the band. Application especially to the twin-roll continuous casting of thin steel strip.

Control process for twin-roll continuous casting

A casting roll for continuous casting of metals. The roll comprising a core (2) and a sleeve (3), coaxially arranged one with respect to the other. The sleeve is axially coupled to the core by a inward projection (33) on the sleeve which abuts a shoulder (24) on the projection. The projection and the shoulder are located in a plane (P) substantially median with respect to the roll. The sleeve is radially centered on the core by flanges (5) and (6) which are elastically coupled together. The flanges and sleeve have relieved surfaces (37) which allow the sleeve to expand axially without bowing. The invention is particularly well suited for continuous casting thin metallic strips, especially steel strips, between two of these casting rolls.

The continuous casting machine comprises two counter-rotary rolls (1, 2) having parallel axes disposed in confronting relation with a given gap therebetween and on the axial ends of which two lateral walls (5a) are applied so as to define a pouring space (3) between the rolls. The rapid changing device for the lateral wall (5a) comprises a turret (14) having means (16) for fixing at least two lateral walls in positions which are separated from each other by a rotation through a given angle about the axis of the turret. Means for shifting the turret in rotation in steps of amplitude corresponding to the given angle of rotation permit shifting one lateral replacement wall (5b) from a standby position to a position occupied by the lateral wall (5a) which is in service and has to be replaced. An installation for levelling a metal strip (3) by advancing it along an undulating path in a levelling stand (10) associated with a plurality of rolls (2, 15, 16, 18) with narrowed ends which may be displaced axially in opposite directions. Narrowed sections (25) are provided at opposite ends of two active levelling rolls (23) (24), and the levelling unit (4) (5) formed by each active roll and associated carrying rollers is mounted on two horizontal beams sliding vertically and associated with jacks (39) (64) for adjusting the axial and vertical position of each levelling unit (4) (5).
