A method may include obtaining a topology of an optical network. The topology may indicate multiple optical links within the optical network. The method may also include determining a signal noise tolerance for each of multiple optical signal types supported by the optical network and obtaining an optical noise for each of the multiple optical links. The method may also include determining a number of the multiple optical signal types that each of the multiple optical links is able to support based on the optical noise for each of the optical links and the signal noise tolerance for each of the multiple optical signal types and ranking the multiple optical links based on the number of the multiple optical signal types that each of the optical links is able to support.

Routing of optical signals

A method may include obtaining a topology of an optical network. The topology may indicate multiple optical links within the optical network. The method may also include obtaining a routing metric for each of the optical links. The routing metric may be used in selecting routes through the optical network along the multiple optical links. The method may further include obtaining a signal noise tolerance of an optical signal to be routed through the optical network and adjusting routing metrics of one or more of the multiple optical links based on the signal noise tolerance of the optical signal. The method may also include after the routing metrics of the one or more of the multiple optical links are adjusted, determining a route for the optical signal through the optical network along two or more of the multiple optical links based on the routing metrics of the multiple optical links.

A method is provided for monitoring a network that includes providing a path selector that can select between a first input and a second input, where the first input is coupled to a customer premises equipment interface that is operable to receive signals from customer premises equipment and the second input is coupled to a test signal generator that is operable to generate test signals. The method also includes determining whether operating customer premises equipment is coupled to an input of the customer premises equipment interface that is coupled to the first input of the path selector. If not, then an idle state is entered into. While in the idle state, it is determined whether a signal is received from the customer premises equipment interface at the first input of the path selector. The test signal received at the second input of the path selector is selected unless a signal is received from the customer premises equipment interface at the first input. The method also includes communicating the test signal from the path selector to the network.

Method and system for monitoring idle network circuits

A method for provisioning a network element is included where a custom default file and a standard default file are provided in a network element. The custom default file includes one or more default parameters of a same type, but having a different value from, corresponding default parameters in the standard default file. Service parameters are determined based on the default parameters of the standard default file as modified by overriding default parameters of the custom default file. The service is generated based on the service parameters.

Provisioning a network element using custom defaults

A transport network includes a flexible topology for internally defining transport elements. The transport elements each include a port group having a plurality of geographically distributed ports from the transport network. Point-to-multipoint connectivity is defined between the ports in a port group. An identifier represents the port group as a single element to internal and/or external elements for protocol exchanges.

A method of configuring a SONET network element to support a test head test session comprises dedicating an otherwise assignable output port of a SONET network element as a test access port, receiving a request to connect a connection switched by a switch fabric of the SONET network element to the test access port, determining whether the request is associated with a test head; and, if the request is associated with the test head, provisioning the switch fabric to connect the connection to the test access port.

Method and system for test head testing of connections of a SONET element

A method and system for automatic concatenation of synchronous optical network (SONET) channels includes receiving at a network element a SONET frame including a mandatory overhead and a plurality of channels for a bundled connection. A signal configuration of the channels in the bundled connection is automatically determined based on the mandatory overhead. The network element is automatically provisioned to cross-connect the channels in the bundled connection based on the signal configuration determined from the mandatory overhead.
