A system and method is provided for generating a tone mapping function to reduce dynamic range of a first image to produce a second image. A luma signal and a plurality of chroma components are determined and a gamut color correction is then performed. An adaptive function is generated by comparing the luma signal and at least one chroma component of the first and second image.

Saturation control for high-dynamic range reconstruction

A system and methods is provided for performing, by a processor, an initial tone mapping function on a first image to produce a second image. The first and second images are of different dynamic ranges. The method also includes applying, by the processor, a second tone mapping function to the second image when it contains any saturated portions. The second tone mapping function lowers luminance by a first fraction. The overall luminance of the second image is also determined and a fine tuning filter is applied when at least portions of said second image contain areas darker than an amount.

Tone mapping adaptation for saturation control

A method and an apparatus for decoding at least one high dynamic range picture from a coded bitstream and a method and corresponding apparatus for coding the bitstream are disclosed. A standard dynamic range picture is decoded from the coded bitstream, a set of pivot points is decoded from the coded bitstream. The set of pivot points is representative of an adjustment function f. A predefined color correction function bis selected. An adjusted color correction function bis determined by 1/b[&#x3b3;]=f[&#x3b3;]&#xd7;(1/b[&#x3b3;]), where &#x3b3; is a luminance value. The high dynamic range picture is reconstructed from the decoded standard dynamic range picture and the adjusted color correction function b.
