An improved phosphor admixture is provided for an electroluminescent cell or lamp which reduces the electric arc susceptibility during normal operation. Said phosphor admixture includes an electrically non-conductive, same color light-transmitting particulate solid as a means of reducing the current density of said electroluminescent cell during operation with a minimum brightness loss.

A series of solid organic luminescent materials is disclosed comprising the condensation product of a substituted aromatic primary amine with an alkyl ester of a hydroxy aromatic acid having an alkyl group containing up to about 6 carbon atoms. The present organic phosphors can be excited with 3650 Angstrom radiation to provide efficient red color emission. A process for the preparation of these phosphors is also disclosed.

Monomeric and polymeric halogenated organic compounds derived from 2,2',6,6'-tetrabromo-3,3',5,5' -tetraalkyl-4,4'-biphenols are described. The derivatives are useful in their monomeric and polymeric form as flame retardant additives and/or concentrates for normally flammable resinous materials. The thermal stability at elevated temperatures of the brominated biphenol derivatives advantageously benefits polymeric compositions containing the brominated biphenol derivatives especially when the polymeric compositions are molded into three dimensional articles, or formed into films, sheeting or shaped into fibers, laminates or reinforced plastics by conventional techniques.

A marking ink for glass and ceramic substrates is disclosed which can be deposited from a liquid dispersion and heat-cured rapidly to provide an insoluble adherent film. The adhesive binder for the marking ink is an inorganic cement produced by heat-reaction between phosphoric acid and an aluminum salt of a weak organic acid to form an insoluble vitreous matrix in the final product. Various liquid dispersions for said marking ink are disclosed which are particularly suitable for application as indicia means upon the glass envelope of an electric lamp and can be applied during conventional lamp manufacture.

This invention relates to a method for preparation of a stereo isomer mixture of crystalline alpha-cyanoethylphthalate wherein the stereo isomer mixture is separated from the reaction mixture by precipitation. More particularly, the stereo isomer mixture is initially formed by reacting lactonitrile and a phthalic acid halide in an organic liquid solution at ambient conditions and the stereo isomer mixture precipitated therefrom by adding an organic precipitant liquid to the reaction mixture. By-products and side-reaction products can be washed from the reaction mixture prior to precipitation of the stereo isomer mixture to provide an alpha-cyanoethylphthalate product having greater purity than conventionally obtained. Additionally, the present alpha-cyanoethylphthalate composition can be characterized as a mixture of the meso and dl isomers wherein one isomer has a predominant weight ratio in the mixture.

Alpha-cyanoethylphthalate and preparation thereof

A novel class of soluble organic nitrogen compounds which produces various colors when dissolved in organic liquid solvents. These dyes produce a color from blue to red if the organic liquid medium has a neutral or basic pH which reversibly changes to yellow if the liquid medium has an acid pH. The color variation can also serve as an indication of solvent polarity.

Bromobiphenols comprising 2,2' ,6,6'-tetraalkyl-3,3',5,5'-tetrabromo-1,1'-biphenols and derivatives thereof are employed as fire-retardant additives for normally flammable resins yielding fire-retardant polymeric compositions. These fire-retardant compositions are thermally stable and can be molded or formed into fire-retardant articles, such as films, sheeting, fibers, laminates, or reinforced plastics by conventional techniques.

Fire-retardant polymeric compositions containing brominated biphenols

Bromobiphenols containing at least two bromine atoms meta to the phenolic hydroxyl groups can be produced from 3,3',5,5'-tetra-substituted diphenoquinones by reacting the latter with bromine. The reaction can be controlled to produce little, if any, by-product. The products obtained are dependent to some extent on the substituents in the four positions ortho to the hydroxyl groups. The biphenols can be used as antioxidants or as starting materials for preparation of flame-retardent polymeric compositions useful in the molding, coating and insulating arts.
