An elevator counterweight () includes a first part (). The first part () is configured to be connected, in use, to a suspension member () of an elevator system (). The first part () is arranged to receive an additional mass () when the first part () is connected to the suspension member (), such that a mass of the elevator counterweight () can be varied. A controller () may be arranged to control a mass variation system () to vary the mass of the elevator counterweight () according to a schedule. The controller () may determine the schedule in a learning process.

The inventive sheave assembly includes individual sheave portions rotatable along a common axis. At least two of the sheave portions are spaced apart along the shaft and a portion of the guide rail extends toward the axis beyond a plane formed tangent to the outer diameter of the sheave portions.

A elevator cab car operating panel has a convex cover cooperating with one of the cab walls to define an enclosed space in which a lighting source is disposed. A pair of translucent panels cooperate with the cover to allow the light to emanate from the car operating panel to provide the primary source of light for the cab. The cab wall may have a concave shape for cooperating with the convex cover to define the enclosed space.
