To reduce the distortion of digital data due to on/off switching of the ringing of a Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) signal (RINGING , RINGING ) transmitted simultaneously with the digital data over a single line (LINE), the telephone ringing signal generator (POTS-RING GENERATOR , POTS RING GENERATOR ) produces a digital data friendly ringing signal (RINGING , RINGING ). The telephone ringing signal generator (POTS-RING GENERATOR , POTS RING GENERATOR ) thereto applies a transient smoothening window (WINDOW , WINDOW ) to a sine or cosine shaped signal (SINE , SINE ).

An apparatus for use in an all digital loop contains a first network node ( ), a second network node ( ), and a data transmission line ( ) there between.
