The display device includes a vacuum-tight envelope having a transparent front wall which is provided with a display screen. The display device comprises an internal selection structure (67) which is provided with holes and with a plurality of electrodes for addressing desired pixels on the display screen. The display device is provided with connection elements (71, 72) which each comprise a springy end portion (73, 74), which contacts an electrode (61, 62) on the selection structure (10), and which connection elements further comprise a feed-through portion (75, 76) to make an electric connection, through a wall of the envelope, between the electrodes (61, 62) and a voltage source situated outside the envelope. Preferably, the springy end portion (73, 74) includes a material which retains its springiness up to temperatures of at least 450.degree. C. for example a spring steel, and the material of the feed-through portion (75, 76) is adapted to the expansion of the material of the envelope. Preferably, the plates (60, 60', 60') of the selection structure (67) are displaced relative to each other in such a manner that the plates (60, 60', 60') do not overlap at locations where the springy end portions (73, 74) of the connection elements (71, 72) contact the electrodes (61, 62). The thin-type display device (1) has a transparent front wall (3), which is provided with a display screen, and a rear wall (24) which extends parallel to said front wall (3), and said display device comprises at least an electron source and a duct structure. The display device (1) is characterized in that the rear wall (24) and walls (22, 22', 22') of the ducts of the duct structure are manufactured in a single piece. Preferably, the walls (22, 22', 22') of the ducts widen in the direction of the rear wall (24), with the angle, which opposing faces of the walls (22, 22', 22') of the ducts make with each other, ranging from 1.degree. to 30.degree.. Preferably, the rear wall (24) further comprises at least an upright side wall (32), which is integral with the rear wall (24). Preferably, the walls (22, 22', 22') are made from a glass having a temperature interval between the operating temperature and the softening temperature of less than 420.degree., perferably less than 360.degree., and the duct structure and the side walls (32) can be pressed in one process step.

A vacuum tube is provided with a line-shaped getter, which includes a holder (2) with a longitudinal axis, which holder (2) contains a getter material (3) over at least a part of its length, said getter being provided with clamping means to clamp the holder (2). The vacuum tube includes aligning means for exerting a torque about the longitudinal axis of the holder (2), said torque being as small as possible for a preferred orientation of the holder (2) relative to the clamping means. The clamping means preferably includes two leaf springs (7, 7'), which are bent so as to be S-shaped and which are provided with apertures (9, 9', 9') at locations where the leaf springs (7, 7') intersect, for passing the holder (2), and a member (6; 19) is provided on the holder (2) in a clamping manner and the clamping means are provided with an orientation surface (17, 17'; 18, 18'), which extends radially relative to the longitudinal axis of the holder (2). In this manner, during the activation of the getter, displacements of the holder (2) in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis are precluded. Both constructions can be used independently and cause the position of the holder (2) to be more accurately defined relative to the other elements of the vacuum tube.

After a plate of electrically insulating, particularly hard and brittle material has been provided with a mask having a very large number of patterned apertures, it is exposed to at least one jet of abrasive powder particles, which jet is moved relative to the plate. In this way a plate is manufactured with a pattern of apertures and/or cavities which are eminently suitable for manipulating electron currents in electronic displays. Plates manufactured in this way may be used, for example, as control plates, spacer plates, or electron transport duct plates in electronic displays.
