An RJ-type electrical connector includes a one-piece stamped and formed shield having a top panel for covering a top wall of a housing of the connector, side panels for covering the opposite sides of the housing, a front panel for covering a front of the housing about a plug opening, and a rear panel for covering a rear of the housing, the bottom of the front panel including a transverse extension which fits under the front portion of the connector housing after fitting of the shield on the housing and before securing the shield to the housing, and the rear panel of the shield including a forwardly extending tab supporting an upwardly extending latch, the latch cooperating with a cavity on the lower side of the connector to secure the shield to the connector when the rear panel of the shield is folded over the rear of the connector to complete assembly of the shield to the connector. The connector can be a multi-port connector, in which case a plurality of engaging of latches and cavities are distributed along the width of the connector adjacent the rear wall.

Shielded multi-port connector and method of assembly

In order to save space and reduce the number of parts needed to mount a plurality of connector types on a circuit board, the different connector types share a common molded housing, and at least two of the connector types share a common shield which may include an integral board lock and which can also be arranged to facilitate mounting filter components in one or more of the connector types. The connector types may include a BNC coaxial cable connector, a modular phone jack connector, and a multiple pin D-sub connector, with the BNC and modular jack connector sharing the common shield. In the case of the BNC connector, both the inner and outer insulators are integrally molded with the one-piece housing.

Combination connector

An electrical connector includes a main body and a separate electrical component retention member which meet at an interface. The connector contacts are positioned in grooves ending in enlarged areas for receiving terminals of an electrical component such as a transformer. The component extends rearwardly from the interface and is retained in an opening in the retention member and the retention member is press fit onto the rear of the main body portion to removably hold the component in plane and align the component with corresponding contacts of the connector.

In order to save space and reduce the number of parts needed to mount a plurality of connector types on a circuit board, the different connector type share a common molded housing, and at least two of the connector types share a common shield which includes an integral board lock and which can also be arranged to facilitate mounting filter components in one, or more of the connector types. The connector types may include a BNC coaxial cable connector, a modular phone jack connector, and a multiple pin D-sub connector, with the BNC and modular jack connector sharing the common shield.

A modular jack connector is arranged to optionally accommodate both a ferrite block inductor arrangement and chip capacitors. The connector can be assembled and all components secured in place in four insertion steps, without any requirement for soldering or other bonding techniques.

A VGA filter connector includes a plurality of capacitor chips electrically connected between signal contacts and a grounding spring located in the connector. One of the connector contacts is a ground contact, and the grounding spring includes a ground tail electrically connected to the ground contact in order to provide a path for transients which extends from the signal contacts to the ground contact via the capacitor chips.

Filtered VGA connector

A decoupled BNC connector includes an integral decoupling unit in the form of a dielectric main body having a parallelepiped-shaped rear section, a cylindrical front section, an opening through the rear section and front section to receive the cylindrical portion of an outer contact, and a plurality of recesses extending through the rear section of the main body in which are positioned chip capacitors. The chip capacitors are held in the recesses by first and second conductive plate springs, secured to the main body, one of the plate springs biasing the chip capacitors into pressure contact with the other. The first conductive plate spring is sandwiched between the rear section of the main body and a parallelepiped-shaped rear section of the outer contact to establish an electrical connection between the contact and one electrode of the capacitor. The second conductive member includes planar sections secured within slots in the rear section of the main body, and extensions which engage a panel in front of the rear section. The outer contact is secured to the dielectric decoupler main body by an interference fit between a projection on the contact and a groove in the opening of the main body, or the main body may be extended to completely the enclose the parallelepiped-shaped portion of the rear contact, and the decoupler main body secured to the outer contact by an aperture in the main body extension and a latching projection on the outer contact.

A high-density electrical connector filtering arrangement includes a dielectric insert having a passage for an electrical contact, a second parallelly extending passage in which a chip capacitor is placed, and a ground plate extending transversely to the contact and through which the contact passes without electrical connection thereto. The live electrode of the chip capacitor is electrically connected to the contact via an integral tab extending from the contact in a direction transverse to a longitudinal direction of the contact, and parallel to the ground plate, the chip capacitor being biased against the tab and electrically connected to ground by a resilient finger or extension having a distal end displaced from the ground plate in a direction parallel to the contact axis and having a ground electrode engaging surface which extends transversely to the contact axis.

High density, filtered electrical connector

A spark gap device includes a conductive main body and an integral conductive flange, but no gap. The gap is formed by installing the device such that the flange positions an end of the main body relative to a conductor which forms a part of or is connected to an electrical contact in an electrical filter connector to form a desired gap between the body and the conductor. The spark gap device thus installed is especially suitable for use in miniature filter connectors of the type in which the filters are capacitor chips positioned in recesses of the connector housing between an electrical contact and a ground clip, the spark gap device replacing a capacitor chip in one of the recesses.

An electrical connector includes a plastic housing having a plurality of cavities into which filter elements are inserted. The cavities communicate with a passage in which contacts are held such that the filter elements contact the electrical contacts. The filter elements are biased against the electrical contacts by a grounding spring having integral fingers extending into the cavities to provide an inwardly directed resilient biasing force when the grounding spring is secured to the connector by, for example, tabs which fit into slots in the dielectric housing. The grounding spring also includes a flange which fits over a mating flange on the housing and is sandwiched between the housing and a corresponding connector or electrical device when the connector is coupled with the corresponding connector or electrical device to thereby provide a direct and uninterrupted ground path from the filter element to the corresponding connector or electrical device. The filter elements may be chip capacitors, metal oxide varistor chips, or similar EMI protection elements.

Electrical connector shell and grounding spring therefor

A connector for electrically connecting the conductors of a flat ribbon-type cable arranged in a first configuration to the contacts of a standard connector arranged in a second configuration comprises a housing receiving a plurality of substantially identical contacts. Each contact comprises a conductor terminating end connected to a contact mating end by a deformable intermediate portion. The contacts are received within the housing, and the contact mating ends thereof are held in the first configuration for mating with standard connector. The conductor terminating ends of the conductor are formed to the second configuration by installing a cover to the connector, the cover having a plurality of tapered contact forming apertures, each guiding a respective conductor terminating end therethrough.

Flat cable connector

A filter connector (24; 90; 116) comprises an electrically conductive shell (60; 91; 118); a dielectric body (50; 93; 120) mounted to the shell and having a sidewall (52), a row of passages (56; 95; 123) extending therethrough with each receiving an electrical contact (51; 97; 124); and a row of separated cavities (58; 99; 122); extending inwardly from the sidewall in a direction transverse to that of the passages with each communicating with only one respective passage; a monolithic chip-type capacitor (80) including active and ground electrodes disposed in each cavity and contacting the contact; and a bias member (70; 100; 126) of electrically conductive material coupling each electrical contact and associated capacitor to the shell. One bias member embodiment comprises a separate comb-like member (70; 100) wherein a plurality of spring tines (74, 76; 104, 106) extend from a common flange (71, 102) with each spring tine having a portion contacting the shell and a knee portion (75; 105) engaging the ground electrode and biasing the active electrode of the capacitor inwardly against the contact, one application mounting the flange (71) to the dielectric body and another application mounting the flange (102) to the shell outer wall. Another bias member embodiment comprises a spring tine (126) having a medial knee portion (127) and a distal foot portion (128) integrally formed to its respective contact with the knee portion biasing the capacitor into contact with the shell and the foot portion into contact with the contact body. Further, separate and integrally formed bias members (110, 130) are provided for grounding mated connector shells.
