A computer-implemented method and a system for generating a path for a vehicle from a source to a target within a two-dimensional (2D) environment with one or more obstacles is disclosed. The obstacles may be dynamic, static or both. The method comprises generating, in a two dimensions-plus-time space, a velocity cone that represents a set of potential waypoints reachable from a first source for the vehicle moving at a speed, providing a polytope, obtaining at least one interception polygon by intersecting and projecting the velocity cone with the polytope on the 2D region; generating a 2D scene comprising interception polygons to avoid, computing a visibility graph algorithm for the 2D scene and obtaining a plurality of conflict-free sub-paths, and composing a valid path connecting the source to the target based on the plurality of conflict-free sub-paths.

Computer-implemented method and a system for defining a path for a vehicle within an environment with obstacles

Example navigation aids for increasing the accuracy of a navigation system are disclosed herein. An example method disclosed herein identifying, with an aircraft intent description language (AIDL) aid, an AIDL instruction as associated with a first dynamic activity level of a plurality of dynamic activity levels and determining, with the AIDL aid, an aircraft state to be affected by the AIDL instruction. The example method also includes changing, with a navigation filter, a weighting scheme for a measurement of the aircraft state obtained by an inertial navigation system (INS) of the aircraft and estimating, with the navigation filter, a trajectory of the aircraft based on the weighting scheme and the measurement.

Navigation aids for unmanned aerial systems in a GPS-denied environment

Example aircraft intent processors are described herein that can be used both for the prediction of an aircraft's trajectory from aircraft intent, and the execution of aircraft intent for controlling the aircraft. An example aircraft intent processor includes an aircraft intent input to receive aircraft intent data representative of aircraft intent instructions, an aircraft state input to receive state data representative of a state of the aircraft, and a residual output. The aircraft intent processor is to calculate residual data representative of an error between a state of the aircraft commanded by the received aircraft intent data and the state of the aircraft expressed by received state data, and output the residual data via the residual output.

System and method for defining and predicting aircraft trajectories

The present disclosure relates to a method of inferring data relating to atmospheric conditions within an airspace of interest using observations of aircraft trajectories. Information relating to aircraft intent may also be inferred. Aircraft flying within the airspace are identified, and their trajectories and aircraft type are determined. Aircraft performance data relating to that type of aircraft is retrieved from memory, along with any filed aircraft intent data. Then, the atmospheric conditions data and, optionally, any missing aircraft intent data that, in combination with the filed aircraft intent data and the aircraft performance data, would give rise to the determined trajectory for each processed aircraft are inferred. The atmospheric data and optionally the missing aircraft intent data are provided as an output.

Using aircraft trajectory data to infer atmospheric conditions

The present invention provides a system and method of producing a description of the flight intent of an aircraft expressed using a formal language. The description may be used to generate a predicted aircraft trajectory, for example by air traffic management. Rules are used in association with information provided to express the flight intent of the aircraft in a formal language. The flight intent describes a flight in terms of flight segments, and provides information of the path to be flown and how it is to be flown. The flight intent does not necessarily define unambiguously the aerodynamic configuration of the aircraft and the motion of the aircraft during the flight. The flight intent is used alongside other information to generate the aircraft intent that does describe unambiguously the aircraft's trajectory.

Providing data for predicting aircraft trajectory

The present disclosure provides a computer-implemented method of generating a description of aircraft intent expressed in a formal language that provides an unambiguous description of an aircraft's intended motion and configuration during a period of flight. A description of flight intent is parsed to provide instances of flight intent, each instance of flight intent spanning a flight segment. For each flight segment, an associated flight segment description is generated that comprises one or more instances of flight intent that describe the aircraft's motion in at least one degree of freedom of motion. One or more instances of flight intent are added to flight segments to close all degrees of freedom of motion. The flight segment descriptions are collated thereby providing a description of aircraft intent for the period of flight expressed in a formal language.

Providing a description of aircraft intent

A method of detecting conflicts between aircraft passing through managed airspace, and to resolving the detected conflicts strategically. Air traffic control apparatus arranged to manage airspace through which aircraft are flying is provided that comprises processing means configured to receive aircraft intent data describing an aircraft's intended flight path, to launch a conflict detection procedure in which it computes a user-preferred trajectory for each of the aircraft based on the aircraft intent and determines whether any conflicts will arise, to launch a conflict resolution procedure in which it calculates revisions of the aircraft intent of the conflicted aircraft to remove the conflicts, and to transmit to the aircraft the revised aircraft intent data.

Conflict detection and resolution using predicted aircraft trajectories

The present disclosure provides a computer-implemented method of generating a description of aircraft intent expressed in a formal language that provides an unambiguous description of an aircraft's intended motion and configuration during a period of flight. A flight intent description is parsed to provide instances of flight intent that span a flight segment, the flight segments together spanning the period of flight. The parsed flight intent is converted into parametric aircraft intent by generating an associated flight segment description for each flight segment that comprises instances of flight intent to close all associated degrees of freedom of motion and of configuration of the aircraft. At least some flight segment descriptions contain a parameter range, and the method further comprises optimizing the parametric aircraft intent by determining an optimal value for the parameter of each parameter range.

The present disclosure relates to methods of calculating and flying continuous descent approaches to an airport or the like, and to aircraft navigation systems for implementing these methods. The present disclosure resides in the recognition that greater predictability in arrival times may be achieved by flying continuous descent approaches by maintaining a constant aerodynamic flight path angle.
