A method of resin transfer molding with a thermoset resin material and including the steps of forming a mold defining a cavity, communicating a hollow sprue with the mold cavity, filling the mold cavity and the sprue with unpolymerized resin and catalyst mixture under pressure, refrigerating the sprue adjacent to the mold cavity so as to delay polymerization of the resin in the sprue to maintain a pressure path through the sprue to the mold cavity during the continued application of pressurized mixture to the sprue, and maintaining the refrigerating of the mixture in the sprue until after at least commencement of polymerization of the resin in the mold cavity to form a molded part.

A method of molding an integrated structure, the method comprising the steps of (a) using at least first and second mold parts to define a primary mold cavity, (b) placing first molding material in the primary mold cavity to form a primary structure, (c) removing the second mold part from the first mold part, (d) using the first mold part and at least a third mold part to define a secondary mold cavity partially filled by the primary structure, and (e) placing second molding material in the remainder of the secondary mold cavity to form the integrated structure including the primary structure and the second molding material.

A method for manufacturing, in a resin transfer molding process, a fiber-reinforced polymer object having an exterior surface with first and second portions, the method comprising the steps of providing a first mold with an inner surface, placing dry reinforcement material on the first mold inner surface, providing a second mold including at least one flexible portion with an inner surface having the shape of the object first exterior surface portion, and the second mold also including at least one rigid portion with an inner surface having the shape of the object second exterior surface portion, placing the second mold over the dry reinforcement material to define a space between the first mold inner surface and the inner surfaces of the flexible and rigid portions, reducing the pressure, relative to ambient pressure, in the space between the molds, injecting resin into the space, and curing the resin.

A fuel injection pump driven by an electric coil, the pump including a poppet valve slidable within a fuel passage in an armature structure and relative thereto in response to movement of the armature structure relative to the pump housing and through a stroke length between a first position permitting flow in a fuel passage from a low pressure fuel chamber to a high pressure fuel chamber, and a second position preventing fuel flow between the high and low pressure fuel chambers, and comprising a head portion located in the high pressure fuel chamber and including a valve surface which is spaced from the valve seat when the poppet valve is in the first position permitting fuel flow from the low pressure fuel chamber to the high pressure fuel chamber, and which is sealingly engaged with the valve seat when the poppet valve is in the second position preventing fuel flow between the high and low pressure fuel chambers, an adjustment member extending in a bore in the housing wall and being engageable with the poppet valve to control the stroke length thereof between the fuel flow permitting and fuel flow preventing positions, and an arrangement for displacing the adjustment member relative to the housing end wall to variably determine the stroke length of the poppet valve.

An apparatus for gluing together first and second pieces of a foam pattern to be used in a lost foam casting process, the apparatus comprising a frame, a glue tank adapted to contain glue, a glue platen supported by the frame for vertical movement relative thereto, the glue platen being movable relative to the frame between a lower position submerged in the glue and an upper position raised above the glue, a center platen located above the glue platen to hold the first pattern piece, the center platen being supported by the frame for pivotal movement relative thereto about a generally horizontal axis, and a top platen for holding the second pattern piece located above the center platen, the top platen being supported by the frame for vertical movement relative thereto between upper and lower positions. While in one pivotable position, the foam piece held by the center platen faces downward and, in the other position, it faces upward. While in the first position, the center platen is movable vertically downward to apply glue to the surface of the first foam piece by contacting the glue platen which is in its upper position. Then, while in the second position, the center platen is movable vertically upward to glue the first foam piece to the second piece. The apparatus also provides a connector to selectively connect the glue platen to the glue tank to thereby selectively raise the tank allowing access to heating elements underneath.

Disclosed herein is a flywheel comprising a hub, a flange extending from the hub and including a central portion having an under surface, an outer surface, a plurality of openings extending through the central portion in a circular array, and a like plurality of vanes which are inclined in the direction from the outer surface toward the under surface and in a first rotary direction opposite to a second or intended direction of flywheel rotation, which are respectively located between the openings, and which respectively include an outer surface extending from the central portion outer surface to the central portion under surface, and an under surface extending from the central portion outer surface to the central portion under surface in generally parallel spaced relation to the vane outer surface, whereby, and in response to flywheel rotation in the intended rotary direction, air is engaged by the vane under surfaces and forced axially in the direction from the outer surface of the central portion to the under surface of the central portion.

Disclosed hereis is a casting having a cast exterior surface and a gate portion extending adjacently and integrally from the cast exterior surface and including a polished outer face located in adjacently raised relation to the cast exterior surface and having a perimeter or outline defining a desired indicia. The casting is produced by a method comprising the steps of forming a casting with a cast exterior surface and a gate which extends from the cast exterior surface and which includes a gate portion located adjacent the cast exterior surface and defined by an outline in the form of the desired indicia and a projection portion extending from the gate portion, severing the gate to remove the projecting portion, to retain, as part of the casting, the adjacent gate portion, and to provide a surface raised with respect to the cast exterior surface and having the outline in the form of the desired indicia, and polishing the raised surface.

A single-piece foam pattern for use in the lost foam casting of a ported cylinder sleeve is formed in a molding tool having a pair of displaceable elements and a removable center core. Ports, of preselected size, shape and location, are defined by movable cores which are extended into position between the displaceable elements and the center core. Following introduction of a molding material, the movable cores are retracted after which the mold elements and center core are separated and the foam pattern is removed.

The time history of a molten metal casting charge being introduced into a mold cavity is recorded by an electrically operated recorder including a plurality of electrical circuits, each of which produces a timing signal upon being completed or closed and is connected to an electrical timing lead having an electrically bare, free end adapted to be located in the mold cavity. The free ends of the timing leads are positioned at predetermined locations of interest in the mold cavity and the molten metal serves as a common ground for completing the electrical circuits in the recorder. The timing cycle is started in response to the molten metal contacting the electrically bare, free end of an electrical trigger lead located near the inlet of the mold cavity and electrically connected to the recorder. Time signals, indicative of the elapsed time between the starting time and the time the molten metal reaches each of the predetermined locations in the mold cavity, are produced in response to the molten metal contacting the free ends of the timing leads.
