A process is provided of treating a feed comprising polyethylene terephthalate comprising dissolving said feed in a polar solvent at a temperature between about 100 to 250&#xb0; C. to produce a dissolved feed; then adding an anti-solvent that is less polar than said polar solvent followed by cooling a resulting mixture resulting in precipitation of purified polyethylene terephthalate and then separation of solid purified polyethylene terephthalate from remaining liquids.

Solvent based approach to post-consumer recycling of polyethylene terephthalate

A process is provided for making a polymer comprising providing a mixture of at least one furandicarboxylic acid, at least one diol, and at least one C2-C3 dicarboxlic acid, ester derivatives of C2-C3 dicarboxylic acid, hydroxy fatty acid or ester derivative of a hydroxy fatty acid; adding a catalyst and processing said mixture at reaction conditions until a polymer product is produced. The polymer consists of random units based upon the starting materials that are used.

Methods for removing contaminants from algal oil are provided. In an embodiment, a method comprises the steps of combining a sulfuric acid-aqueous solution that has a pH of about 1 or less with a contaminant-containing algal oil at treatment conditions effective to form an effluent. The effluent comprises a treated algal oil phase and contaminants in an acidic aqueous phase. The contaminants comprise metals, phosphorus, or combinations thereof. The acidic aqueous phase is removed from the effluent to form a contaminant-depleted algal oil.

Methods for removing contaminants from algal oil

Methods for deoxygenating a biomass-derived pyrolysis oil are provided. A method for deoxygenating a biomass-derived pyrolysis oil comprising the steps of combining a biomass-derived pyrolysis oil stream with a heated low-oxygen-pyoil diluent recycle stream to form a heated diluted pyoil feed stream is provided. The heated diluted pyoil feed stream has a feed temperature of about 150&#xb0; C. or greater. The heated diluted pyoil feed stream is contacted with a first deoxygenating catalyst in the presence of hydrogen at first hydroprocessing conditions effective to form a low-oxygen biomass-derived pyrolysis oil effluent.

Methods for deoxygenating biomass-derived pyrolysis oil

Methods for processing algal oils are provided. In an embodiment, a method for removing a contaminant from an oil includes contacting the oil with a base to form an intermediate solution. Further, the method includes contacting the intermediate solution with an acid to form an acidic solution. The method separates the acidic solution into an oil portion and an aqueous waste portion including the contaminant.

Methods for removing contaminants from oils using base washing and acid washing

Methods are provided for producing low oxygen biomass-derived pyrolysis oil from carbonaceous biomass feedstock. The carbonaceous biomass feedstock is pyrolyzed in the presence of a steam reforming catalyst to produce char and pyrolysis gases. During pyrolysis, a portion of the oxygenated hydrocarbons in the pyrolysis gases is converted into hydrocarbons by steam reforming also yielding carbon oxides and hydrogen gas. The hydrogen gas at least partially deoxygenates a residual portion of the oxygenated hydrocarbons. Additional hydrogen gas may also be produced by water-gas shift reactions to deoxygenate the residual portion of the oxygenated hydrocarbons in the pyrolysis gases. Deoxygenation may occur in the presence of a hydroprocessing catalyst. A condensable portion of the pyrolysis gases is condensed to form low oxygen biomass-derived pyrolysis oil.

Low oxygen biomass-derived pyrolysis oils and methods for producing the same

Packed bed reactors that have a series of alternating layers of packing. A first packing layer has open body packing elements randomly packed in a layer up to about 10 packing elements deep; and a second packing layer has porous support elements of hydrophobic foam. The porous support elements are randomly packed up to about 10 porous support elements deep. Further, the packing elements of the first layer include substantially cylindrical shapes and the porous support elements of the second layer include substantially rectilinear shapes. In some embodiments, the second layer supports microbial organisms in a biological reactor, and the first layer of open body packing provides fluid flow spaces to facilitate fluid flow and distribution, mass transfer, and to minimize channeling.

Process reactor with layered packed bed

A water purification system comprising a thermal hydrolysis catalytic reactor, an adsorbent media bed and a reverse osmosis unit is provided. The water purification system may provide potable water from non-potable water, such as non-potable water contaminated with chemical warfare agents, biological warfare agents, radioactive agents and/or Toxic Industrial Chemicals (TICs). Methods for providing potable water using the water purification system of the present invention are also provided.

Water purification system and modes of operation

A system for recovering and purifying water from a gas stream may include, a gas stream purification unit for purifying the gas stream, a water separation unit for separating water from the purified gas stream, and a water purification unit for purifying the water separated by the water separation unit. The gas stream purification unit may include comprise a soot reactor and a catalytic oxidation reactor or both. The water separation unit may include a condenser, a water extractor and a cyclic reverse osmosis system.

Water recovery and purification

A biological system for removing selenium from waste water comprises a first immobilized cell bioreactor (ICB) and a selenide removal module. The first ICB comprises a chamber having a substrate housed therein and situated to contact the waste water flowing therethrough during use. Anaerobic microorganisms are supported on the substrate, and comprise selenium respiring bacteria capable of reducing selenates and selenites to insoluble elemental selenium and/or sulfate reducing bacteria capable of reducing selenates and selenites to insoluble elemental selenium or to soluble selenides. The selenide removal module includes metallic or oxidized iron compounds capable of chemically reacting with selenide or sulfide compounds in the waste water to form iron selenide or iron sulfide precipitates.

System and methods for biological selenium removal from water

A chemical munition hydrolysate treatment system pretreats agent hydrolysate with irradiation in the presence of an oxidant and processes the pre-treated chemical agent and energetic materials through a series of treatment processes until a preselected level of destruction is achieved. The treatment process includes a biological treatment of the aqueous wastestreams and catalytic oxidation of the air exhaust streams.

Treatment of chemical hydrolysates

A composition comprising a binder and a residue wherein the residue comprises a blend of polypropylene, styrene butadiene rubber and calcium carbonate. The residue is a novel material derived as a coproduct from the medium-pressure depolymerization of nylon 6 carpet. The compositions are useful as road asphalt, asphalt roof membranes, molding compounds, and plastic lumber such as palisades and spacers.

Composition containing novel modifier

A biologically active support is provided for removal of pollutants such as aliphatics, aromatics, heteroaromatics and halogenated derivatives from waste streams. The support contains a particulate adsorbent such as activated carbon bound by a polymer binder to a substrate such as a polymeric foam, and a bound pollutant-degrading microorganism. The adsorbent adsorbs a target pollutant, and the microorganism degrades the pollutant. Preferably, the microorganism is aerobic and the binder has a T of lower than or equal to about 25&deg; C. The adsorbent adsorbs excess pollutant when the pollutant concentration increases and releases the pollutant when the concentration decreases. This maintains the pollutant concentration at a level which does not inhibit the microorganism. The biologically active support can be used in conventional biological waste treatment systems such as continuous stirred reactors, fixed-bed reactors and fluidized bed reactors.

Biologically active support containing bound adsorbent particles and microorganisms for waste stream purification

A chemical munitions destruction system subjects the chemical agent and energetic materials to a series of treatment processes until a preselected level of destruction is achieved. The treatment processes include chemical neutralization and processing of both the chemical and energetic agents, biological treatment of the aqueous waste streams and catalytic oxidation of the air exhaust streams. In certain cases, the energetic agent and/or the propellant components of the munitions are converted to valuable chemicals by means of catalytic hydrotreating.
