A ductile alloy consisting essentially of, by weight percent, 0.05 to 0.4 aluminum, at least 0.003 calcium, 0 to 0.05 carbon, 19.5 to 23.5 chromium, 1.5 to 3 copper, 0 to 1 manganese, 2.5 to 3.5 molybdenum, 38 to 46 nickel, 0.6 to 1.2 titanium and the balance iron and incidental impurities.

Ductile nickel-iron-chromium alloy

Hot working a nickel-chromium alloy that contains by weight percent, 42 to 65 chromium, 0.002 to 0.1 calcium, 0.002 to 0.1 magnesium, 0 to 2 aluminum, about 0 to 5 cobalt, 0 to 3 copper, 0 to 5 iron, 0 to 5 manganese, 0 to 3 molybdenum, 0 to 3 niobium, 0 to 2 silicon, 0 to 3 tantalum, 0 to 5 titanium, 0 to 5 tungsten, 0 to 5 vanadium, 0 to 1 zinc, 0 to 0.2 carbon 0 to 0.1 silver, 0 to 0.1 cerium, 0 to 0.1 phosphorus, 0 to 0.1 sulfur, less than 0.005 total boron, rare earths and zirconium and balance nickel and incidental impurities, at a temperature of at least 800.degree. C. improves formability for .alpha.-phase chromium alloys.

Hot working high-chromium alloy

The process of the invention provides an improved method for forming sheet of iron-base ODS alloys. Powder containing iron and a substantially uniformly distributed oxide dispersoid is hot compacted into a billet. The billet is hot rolled in a first direction to introduce a predetermined amount of cold work into said billet. The hot rolled billet is then cold rolled in a second direction substantially perpendicular to said first direction after the hot rolling to form the iron-base ODS sheet. The cold rolling also introduces a predetermined amount of cold work into the billet. Preferably, the hot rolling and cold rolling are balanced to produce substantially uniform properties in the transverse and longitudinal directions.

Sheet processing for ODS iron-base alloys

A tundish system for teeming an entire heat from a furnace into a mold. The tundish includes a plurality of chambers; one chamber including a nozzle. The chambers are arranged to interrupt the flow of the heat from one chamber to another thereby causing better separation between the metal and the slag. The tundish is mounted on a movable frame supporting a plurality of molds. A trough is disposed between the tundish and the molds. During the pour, the tundish remains stationary as the trough and the molds are moved underneath in succession.

Malleability and resistance to cracking of alloys containing nickel, copper, sulfur, etc. are enhanced through the co-presence of cerium and magnesium.

An electrode for electroslag remelting is provided by combination of an ingot having a toe end with an essentially flat outer annular surface and a central protrusion together with a current-carrying stub bridging across the central protrusion and welded to the flat portion of the ingot toe end on opposite sides of the protrusion such that metal wastage and surface preparation costs for stub-to-ingot welding are avoided.
