A method of producing a glass panel for a LCD device. The method comprises depositing on at least one surface of the panel a transparent film from an atmosphere of an atomized, or ionized, inert, refractory material, or reactive precursor, the film being 50-500 nm thick. The panel is subjected to a heat treatment to compact the glass, the deposited film preventing glass adherence during the compacting heat treatment.

A materials system comprising a glass containing alkali metal ions capable of migrating and a silica, alumina, or tantala film deposited on the glass surface, the glass also containing high field strength ions that can change coordination. The direction of alkali metal ion flow depends on the film selected and the glass composition.

A method for producing a glass panel for silicon device fabrication, which method comprises forming a noncrystalline, or mixed-phase, silicon film on a glass substrate, the glass having a strain point greater than 560.degree. C., and subjecting the filmed glass to a heat treatment comprising heating at a temperature of at least 550.degree. C. for a period of time sufficient to convert the silicon film to polycrystalline silicon and to compact the glass.

Silicon device production

An improved method for crystallizing amorphous or polycrystalline material is disclosed, which method employs a novel intermediate product. A film of material to be crystallized is formed on a substrate. A porous silica cap is formed over the film. The resultant intermediate product is heated to melt the film which crystallizes upon cooling. Gases generated during melting of the film escape through the porous cap which also functions to prevent deleterious agglomeration of the material while it is in a molten state.

A heat pipe for converting solar energy into thermal energy comprising an envelope provided with an evaporator region and a condensor region, a quantity of vaporizable working fluid within the envelope, a wick within the envelope having capillary means for transporting the working fluid, and, preferably, evacuated transparent container means surrounding the evaporator region for insulating the evaporator region. The evaporator region of the heat pipe is made from a material which is substantially transparent to radiation in a selected range of the solar spectrum, and a wick therewithin which substantially absorbs radiation in at least a portion of the range of the solar spectrum transmitted through the evaporator region. Solar energy is thereby converted into thermal energy or heat directly within the wick, and the heat generated within the wick causes portions of the working fluid therein to evaporate.
