There is provided a fuel injector system for vaporizing liquid fuel and metering the vapor to an internal combustion engine of an automobile. The system has at least one fuel injector with at least one capillary flow passage with a heat source arranged along the flow passage capable of heating liquid fuel in the flow passage to a level sufficient to vaporize it, a solenoid operated metering valve located at the capillary outlet for metering vaporized fuel to the internal combustion engine, and a system for operating the metering valve while delivering the vaporized fuel at an opening and closing frequency of at least 15 Hz or more preferably at least 60 Hz independent of engine rpm. The system is expected to be useful for starting a cold engine with reduced emissions.

Methods and apparatuses for cleaning an electrical lighter are provided. A sleeve, e.g., ceramic or metal, surrounds the heater fixture, and a resistive heating element is in thermal proximity with the sleeve. The resistive heating element is either a dedicated element or the cigarette heating elements. The sleeve serves as a aerosol barrier and condensate accumulator to protect other components. Periodically, e.g., substantially contemporaneously with a battery recharge, the heating element is activated to thermally liberate condensates deposited on the sleeve during smoking and also heats, and thereby cleans, other components. Also, a cleaning element is optionally inserted into the cigarette receptacle of the electrical lighter or placed at the exit thereof to absorb, attract and/or catalytically break down the thermally liberated condensates. The sleeve also directs a desired flow path for drawn air within an electrical lighter toward the cigarette.

A smoking article and method is provided in which a liquid tobacco flavor generating system is used to deliver a liquid tobacco flavor medium to a heater to generate a predetermined quantity of tobacco flavor substance for delivery to a smoker. The article includes an electrical heating means, a tobacco flavor medium delivery system, a source of electrical energy and a control means to generate the tobacco flavor substance for delivery to a smoker.

A heating element for use within a smoking device which is intended to be held in the lips of a consumer, and which, without burning, heats a flavor-generating medium within the device to produce an aerosol, vapor, or flavor, which the consumer may inhale. More particularly, an electrically-powered heating element having a plurality of discrete resistive heating segments, only one of which is active at any given time. In a preferred embodiment, the heating element is contained within the device so that the individual heating segments of the element are adjacent to a flavor-generating medium. As each segment of the heating element is provided with power, the flavor-generating medium adjacent to that segment is heated, but is not burned. This heating causes the flavor-generating medium to produce a flavor, aerosol, or vapor, which the consumer of the device may inhale.

Electrically-powered heating element

Methods and apparatus for releasing flavor components from a flavor-generating medium using an electric heating element are provided. A non-combustion flavor-generating article uses electrical energy to power a heating element which heats tobacco or other flavorants. The flavor-generating medium is formed into a packed bed. Energy delivered to the heating element is regulated to maintain the flavor-generating medium at a relatively constant operating temperature to ensure a relatively constant release of flavor.

A heating element for use within a smoking device which is intended to be held in the lips of a consumer, and which without burning, heats a flavor-generating medium within the device to produce an aerosol, vapor, or flavor, which the consumer may inhale. A filter cigarette is provided in which the smoker can select different flavorants or filter media for interposition in the smoke stream. A filter segment having two flow paths, each containing different flavoring or filtering media, cooperates with one or two rotatable end caps having openings for selective registration with the flow paths, are used to select the desired flow path. A method of delivering 'air-swept flavor' is also provided.

Filter cigarette

A package, such as a cigarette pack, is provided with a receptacle for containing a fragrance or flavor to be released upon initial opening by the consumer. The receptacle is provided by attaching to the polymeric film circumscribing the sealed package, in the area overlying the tear tape, an additional layer of polymeric film. The fragrance or flavor is entrapped between the polymeric film and the extra polymeric layer and is released when the tear tape is pulled through the receptacle to unseal the pack. The receptacle can be provided with compartments to minimize leakage or to allow the flavor or fragrance to be kept in two or more relatively inert components which react on contact to form the fragrance or flavor or, possibly, to form a propellant to disperse the fragrance or flavor.

An adjustable filter cigarette is provided with detents for tactile indication of the degree of adjustment. The detents include a protuberance on the surface of the filter mating with cutouts in the tipping paper, or a protuberance on the inside of the tipping paper mating with depressions on the surface of the filter.

A cigarette is provided having a variable length. A filter or mouthpiece slides within a sleeve attached to the cigarette, or a sleeve attached to the filter or mouthpiece slides over the cigarette. A single band is adhered to one element and a pair of bands is adhered to the other element. The single band is captive between the pair of bands so that the cigarette can be lengthened or shortened within the range allowed by the pair of bands, but the filter or mouthpiece cannot be removed from the cigarette. The variable length mechanism can be made to additionally provide variable dilution or variable flavorant.

A filter cigarette is provided in which the smoker can select varying levels of one or more flavorants to be added to the smoke stream. A rotatable filter segment having several smoke flow paths, each containing a different flavorant material, cooperates with a baffle to select one or more paths through which the smoke stream will travel.
