An electrostatographic reproduction apparatus, utilizing an intermediate image transfer member to transfer marking particle images to a receiver member, including a mechanism for facilitating duplex copying. The mechanism for facilitating duplex copying has a prefuser in juxtaposition with a portion of a receiver member travel path, downstream of the intermediate transfer member. An inverter is provided for transporting a receiver member from the prefuser back to the intermediate transfer member in a side-for-side inverted orientation. A control selectively activates the prefuser for tacking a first side image to a receiver member, and diverts such receiver member into the inverter to be transported to the intermediate transfer member to have a second side image formed thereon.

A magnetic brush development apparatus for applying pigmented marking particles to a latent image charge pattern on a dielectric member. The magnetic brush development apparatus comprises a housing defining, in a portion thereof, a sump for containing a mixture of magnetic carrier particles and pigmented marking particles. A mixer is located in the sump of the housing for mixing magnetic carrier particles and pigmented marking particles so as to effect a triboelectric attraction of the pigmented marking particles to the magnetic carrier particles. The mixed magnetic carrier particles and attracted pigmented marking particles are attracted to an intermediate member, transported by the intermediate member from the sump, and then separated by the intermediate member such that the magnetic carrier particles are returned to the sump. A magnetic brush development roller including a magnetic core and a shell rotatable relative to one another, has the shell coated with a prescribed layer of magnetic carrier particles and an electrical bias applied to the shell. The marking particles are attracted from the intermediate member to the magnetic brush and then transferred to a latent image charge pattern on the dielectric member to develop such pattern.

Xeroprinting is performed without fusing a master toner image. A master toner image is made by conventional electrophotography, for example, by charging, imagewise exposing and applying toner to a photoconductive imaging member to create a first toner image. The first toner image is charged with charges of a first polarity opposite that of the toner image and the member is erased with erase illumination through its base. This creates a toner image with a charge opposite that of the original toner image which is tightly held by opposite charges which have migrated to the portion of the electrophotosensitive member just under the toner. The imaging member is then toned again with toner of the same polarity as the original toner to create a second toner image that overlies the first toner image. The imaging member is again erased through its base, and the second toner image is transferred to a receiving sheet without disturbing the first toner image. The toner image may then be used as a master to repeat the process but without the necessity of creating the master toner image again.
