The present invention provides fast-drying aqueous compositions that lower the cost of making roadway markings without impairing the quality or appearance of the markings made therewith. The aqueous compositions comprise one or more hollow core binder having an average particle size of from 200 to 500 nanometers (nm), preferably from 300 to 470 nm, and made of a first polymer having a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 50&#xb0; C. or more and containing one or more void, the first polymer being substantially encapsulated by one or more second polymer having a Tg of &#x2212;30&#xb0; C. or more, preferably, &#x2212;20&#xb0; C. or more. Fast-drying aqueous compositions may be one component or two component compositions. One component compositions comprise one or more volatile base, one or more polyfunctional amine, and one or more hollow core binder with a second polymer chosen from, for example, an anionically stabilized emulsion polymer, a polyamine functional polymer, a polymer having strong pendant cationic groups containing and mixtures thereof. The polyfunctional amine can be part of the hollow core binder. Two component compositions comprise one or more aqueous hollow core binder and an absorber component. The present invention also provides coatings and roadway markings made from the fast-drying aqueous compositions.

The present invention relates to the preparation of water based coating compositions having extended storage stability. The composition includes separately stored polymeric binder component and a crosslinking component. These components are mixed prior to application over surfaces, such as, road surfaces. The polymeric binder component includes an anionically stabilized binder polymer having at least one reactive functional pendent moiety, or a blend of the binder polymer with a polyfunctional amine. The pot mix of the coating composition has extended storage stability. The waterborne road marking paints of the present invention exhibit improved wear resistance on road surfaces in terms of paint remaining on the road longer than waterborne road marking paints based on the storage stable component alone. The present invention provides road marking paints that can be applied by conventional road striping equipment and do not require special two component spray equipment.

The present invention is directed to a method of producing wear resistant traffic paint composition. In accordance with the method, a traffic marking of a traffic paint composition having low GPC number average molecular weight latex binder when applied to the road surface exhibits improved wear resistance over those traffic paint compositions having high GPC number average molecular weight latex binders. The wear resistance is further enhanced by modifying the latex polymer used in the composition with acetoacetyl functional pendant moiety and amino silane.
