Drilling mud is rapidly decomposed by admixing one or more enzymes with the mud to selectively degrade one or more polymeric organic viscosifiers therein. A method of cleaning up a well site drilling mud pit containing drilling mud is provided. Also provided are a composition and method of removing residual drilling mud from a wellbore and around the well face.

Enzymatic decomposition of drilling mud

The high temperature water loss property of alkaline well completion and well workover fluids is improved by the addition of an effective amount of a naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensate in the form of its monovalent or bivalent metal salts.

Workover fluid

When added to a water-based workover or completion fluid, a mixed polysaccharide such as a malto-dextrin reduces the gel strength and water loss from said fluid, simultaneously increasing yield point.
