A new zeolite, designated ZSM-22, is disclosed and claimed. The new zeolite has the composition, in the anhydrous state, expressed in terms of mole ratios of oxides as follows:

A method is provided for reducing NO.sub.x for high flow applications such as NO.sub.x abatement in an exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine operating under lean burn conditions wherein NO.sub.x is reduced by hydrocarbon reductants. The method employs a hydrothermally stable catalyst comprising transition metal-containing ZSM-5 which is prepared by in-situ crystallization of an aggregate comprising ZSM-5 seeds, silica, and a crystalline silicate.

Long chain alkyl substituted aromatic compounds, particularly alkylated naphthalenes, are produced by the alkylation of aromatics, e.g. naphthalene, with an olefin or other alkylating agent possessing at least 6 carbon atoms, usually 12 to 20 carbon atoms, in the presence of a zeolite alkylation catalyst, preferably a large pore size zeolite such as zeolite Y and in the presence of from about 0.5 to 3.0 weight percent water, preferably 1.0 to 3.0 weight percent. The use of the water co-feed increases the selectivity of the alkylation for the production of long chain mono-alkyl substituted naphthalenes in preference to more highly substituted products and also increases activity and catalyst stability.

Aromatics alkylation process

There is provided a process for demetallizing hydrocarbon feedstocks, such as resids or shale oil. The process uses a catalyst comprising at least one hydrogenation metal, such as nickel and molybdenum, and an ultra-large pore oxide material. This ultra-large pore oxide material may have uniformly large pores, e.g., having a size of about 40 Angstroms in diameter.

There is provided a method for making large crystal size ZSM-5. This method involves the use of two organic cations, specifically tetrapropylammonium (TPA) and tetramethylammonium (TMA) cations, in the reaction mixture. This method further involves the use of a source of deliberately added alumina, such as aluminum sulfate, in the reaction mixture.

There are provided aromatic conversion reactions for preparation of dialkylbenzenes, such as xylene and ethyltoluene, of enhanced para isomer content with a zeolitic catalyst composition of improved shape selectivity. The catalysts comprise certain zeolites which have been calcined at a high temperature of at least 649.degree. C. (i.e., 1200.degree. F.). These zeolites have a silica/alumina ratio of at least about 12 and a constraint index within the approximate range of 1 to 12. Examples of such zeolites include ZSM-5 and ZSM-11.

Zeolitic catalyst composition of improved shape selectivity

Modified ZSM-5 type zeolite catalyst is prepared by controlled aging in a moving bed catalytic cracking unit. The modified catalyst exhibits significant olefin isomerization activity and reduced paraffin cracking activity. Hydrocarbons are cracked to products boiling in the motor fuel range, e.g., gasoline, by using the modified catalyst mixture comprising a ZSM-5 type zeolite and a conventional cracking catalyst. The ZSM-5 type zeolite is treated with partial pressure steam under conditions which increase the gasoline octane number of the product fuel without decreasing gasoline plus distillate yield. A process for changing a catalytic cracking unit's inventory from a conventional catalyst to a modified ZSM-5 type containing catalyst is also disclosed.

A continuous process is described for manufacturing a wide variety of zeolites having selected crystal sizes and other desired characteristics. Selected raw materials are fed to a precursor tank of relatively large capacity, wherein the resultant zeolite precursor slurry is held at temperatures of up to 180.degree. F. for 4-16 hours, with high shear agitation, as an induction period. The slurry is sent to a plurality of crystallization tanks before it possesses a total solids content exceeding 10% by weight and a crystalline content exceeding 15% by weight of the total solids content. The crystallization tanks are preferably operated in two stages. The first crystallizing stage is held at a temperature of 180.degree.-250.degree. F. for 2-72 hours. The second crystallizing stage is held at a temperature greater than 250.degree. F. for 2-16 hours.

A process for catalytically cracking a hydrocarbon feed in a reaction zone under catalytic cracking conditions in the absence of added hydrogen with a catalyst comprising a conventional cracking catalyst. The improvement comprises adding to the conventional cracking catalyst a thermally treated zeolite having a mole ratio of SiO.sub.2 :Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 of about 10:1 to 100:1 and a constraint index of about 1 to 12. Thermal treatment reduces the additive zeolite's alpha activity to about 1 to 10 prior to use.
