A microtube-strip module, consisting of a plurality of parallel rows of microtubes, metallurgically bonded to rectangular header tubestrips, is encapsulated in solid metal in such a way as to leave at least one major surface exposed in a manner suitable for metallurgical bonding to an objective surface requiring heat transfer. Fluid connections are provided perpendicular to the objective surface to facilitate parallel manifolding of a plurality of these modules with high surface coverage. The device is intended for ultra high thermal flux applications, especially in aerospace and in controlled thermonuclear fusion, for the efficient transfer of heat between an objective surface and a working fluid, especially high pressure helium gas.

Microtube strip surface exchanger

Two or more high power rf capacitors are mounted on the surface of a printed circuit board that has been developed, etched, and plated to receive the capacitors and to engage mating spring contact fingers for electrical contact between the tuned circuit and the capacitors on one or both sides of the strip. An extension handle is attached to the strip to permit external insertion of the capacitor assembly into close proximity to the coil in an NMR probe, thereby permitting efficient multinuclear capability in a high power NMR probe.

The capacitively shortened slotted line resonator or single turn saddle coil, as used in nuclear magnetic resonance signal reception, is modified by forming two axial slots from one end nearly to the opposite end through the center of the axial conductor bands. The resulting parallel arrangement of two inductor saddle loops is essentially transparent to rf magnetic fields orthogonal to its own rf magnetic field direction and orthogonal to the axis of the resonator, which allows for higher efficiency and sensitivity when two orthogonal saddle coils are employed in double resonance NMR experiments.

Parallel single turn saddle resonator for nuclear magnetic resonance

A high speed cylindrical nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) sample spinner includes a housing to which pressurized air is supplied. A cylindrical stator is mounted within the housing and is adapted to support a receiver coil. There are spaced along the length of the stator a number of circumferentially spaced openings through which the pressurized air is transmitted from the housing to the interior of the stator. A solid to be analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance is placed within a rotor and the rotor is inserted into the stator. The rotor is supported within the stator by the pressurized air transmitted through one or more of the openings formed in the stator. The rotor is driven by a turbine-shaped end cap which is responsive to the air supplied through other of the openings formed in the stator.

High speed cylindrical nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) sample spinner

Insulation material includes a fibrous material and a low conductivity gas sealed within a casing made from one or more heat sealable laminate sheets. The fibrous material is partially secured to the inner surface of the casing with adhesive means. The laminate sheets each comprise at least two thermoplastic films reinforced longitudinally with glass fibers comprising at least 2% by volume of the thermoplastic films. The films are bonded together orthogonally so as to produce a biaxially reinforced sheet. One or more ductile low conductivity abrasion resistant thin metallic films are deposited over substantially all of one or both sides of the biaxially reinforced sheets.

Low conductivity gas sealed building insulation

A sensible heat storage method for use in conventional buildings with basements is disclosed that permits the long term storage of solar energy at reasonable efficiency in amounts appropriate for home heating. An exchanger consisting of a plurality of closely spaced, small diameter parallel or serpentine tubes with suitable manifolds is constructed on the central portion of the basement floor. The exchanger is covered with a layer of fine gravel, followed with a layer of waterproof insulation. Finally a second floor is supported on studs resting edgewise on the original basement floor. Horizontal conduction heat losses are reduced by allowing a peripheral margin, insulated from above, about the exchanger and by using a flow reversing system that maintains a horizontal temperature gradient within the exchanger.
