A tape head assembly for writing data to and reading data from a tape includes a tape head member having an engagement surface that is configured to engage the tape as the tape moves past the tape head member. A plurality of arrays of interactive elements are supported on the engagement surface. Each array is longitudinally offset from each other array. Each individual array includes a read group having only read elements and a write group having only write elements. Each read group is laterally offset from each write group within each array.

In at least one embodiment, a magnetic recording head comprising first and second linear levels of magnetic recording devices is provided. Each device in the first linear level is aligned adjacently in a row and is spaced apart from another device in the first linear level. The first linear level is perpendicular to a comparative direction of a recording media travel. The second linear level of magnetic recording devices being connected to the first linear level of magnetic recording devices. Each device in the second linear level is aligned adjacently in a row and is spaced apart from another device in the second linear level. Each device in the second linear level is aligned with an insulating gap between the each device in the first linear level.

A magnetic head for writing data to and reading data from a magnetic recording medium includes an inductive-type writer, an anisotropic magneto-resistive (AMR) reader, and a giant magneto-resistive (GMR) reader. The AMR reader is used to read data from 'high magnetic flux' recording mediums which have been recorded for use with AMR sensors. The GMR reader is used to read data from 'low magnetic flux' recording mediums which have been recorded for use with GMR sensors. As such, the magnetic head provides for backward compatibility between the previously prevalent &#x201c;high magnetic flux&#x201d; recording mediums and the expected future prevalent &#x201c;low magnetic flux&#x201d; recording mediums. The magnetic head may be configured such that the writer and the AMR and GMR readers share sensor shields in various configurations in order to carry out their writing and reading functions.

A giant magneto-resistive (GMR) transducer for reading data signals magnetically recorded on tape includes a GMR sensor and a separation structure formed on a front edge of the GMR sensor. The GMR sensor reads data signals magnetically recorded on a tape located at a head-tape interface. The separation structure physically separates the GMR sensor from the head-tape interface. The separation structure includes at least one film formed of at least one of non-magnetic and ferromagnetic materials such that the separation structure isolates the GMR sensor from physical contact with the tape at the head-tape interface while maintaining the ability of the GMR sensor to read data signals magnetically recorded on the tape even though the GMR sensor is physically separated from the tape at the head-tape interface. The separation structure may include an under-layer film and an isolation film. The GMR transducer is fabricated by a series of fabrication steps.

The present invention relates to a thin-film read element for use in reading magnetic signals from a device. The read element includes a first thin-film read sensor and a second thin-film read sensor that are each configured to convert the magnetic signals of the device to electrical signals.

A method for stabilizing magnetic domains in dual stripe magnetic read heads is provided. This method first comprises providing a plurality of coupled magneto-resistive read elements in a spaced relationship. These read elements include top and bottom patterned magnetic shields on ceramic substrates, with two magneto-resistive (MR) sensor elements between the shields, all separated by insulating layers. Magnetic support structures are provided adjacent and separated from the coupled read elements, wherein the magnetic support structures provide a uniform magnetic field that stabilizes the magnetic domains of the MR sensors in the coupled read elements.

A head structure for writing data on a magnetic media including a first pole having an upper surface and a write gap covering a portion of the upper surface. An upper pole tip formed on the write gap having a first width. A second pole having a second width greater than the first width and coupling to an upper surface of the upper pole tip. A conductive coil magnetically coupled to the first pole and the second pole to induce magnetic flux within the first and second pole in response to a current flowing in the coil.
