The apical third of a root canal is cleaned and/or shaped during a root canal procedure with an endodontic file made from a titanium-based alloy either by reciprocating manual use or by using a reciprocating powered hand piece. The titanium-based endodontic file has super-elastic properties that allow it to be very flexible and strong. The endodontic file is rotated in the apex of a root canal in degrees of rotation less than 120 degrees. By restricting the degree of rotation, excessive cutting by the endodontic file is kept to a minimum. The use of elastic alloys of titanium help prevent ledging or other damage to the root canal wall that may be caused using rigid apical files made of stainless steel.

Methods for apical preparation using endodontic instruments made of super-elastic alloys

A root canal is cleaned in a manner that at least partially approximates the actual anatomy of the root canal. An endodontic file instrument is inserted into an exposed root canal, such as an asymmetric root canal, and then rotated and moved in a manner so as to have a plurality of centers of rotation. The file instrument may be moved from side to side and/or in a milling motion and/or using the contours of the root canal as a guide in order to remove substantially all of the pulp material, e.g., from the operative middle portion of the root canal. In this way, less of the surrounding dentin is removed compared to conventional methods. The file instrument may be rotated in a single direction, or it may have a reciprocating motion.

Methods for cleaning and shaping asymmetrical root canals in an anatomical fashion

A dental instrument is provided for use in an endodontic procedure which has a file extending from a handle configured to enable the working length of the handle to be varied. The handle of the instrument is adapted to be received in and to be releasably held by a chuck or collet of an endodontic handpiece head. Both the handles and chucks are adapted to enable the handles to be appropriately positioned in the chuck of a dental handpiece head at various positions to yield a desired working length and to then be secured. The rim around the chuck is preferably configured to act as a stop during use of the handpiece. The instrument is most useful when configured with incremental adjustment indicators, preferably in uniform increments, such that the working length can be determined by viewing the indicators.

The pulp material is then sequentially removed from the portion of the root canal above the apical portion of the root canal with a set of instruments. The apical portion is then optionally cleaned with another set of instruments. Another optional set of instruments can also be used to improve the access into the apical portion such that irrigants can be delivered to the apical portion.

A root canal is sequentially cleaned in sections from the crown to the apex by dividing it into three sections including an operative coronal portion, an operative middle portion and an apical portion. The pulp material is then sequentially removed from the portion of the root canal above the apical portion of the root canal with a set of instruments having stainless steel files. The apical portion is then cleaned with another set of instruments that have nickel/titanium files. An optional set of instruments can also be used to improve the access into the apical portion such that irrigants can be delivered to the apical portion.

The files used to clean the portion of the root canal above the apical portion have properties which enable the abrading portion of the file to conform to the configuration of the root canal while simultaneously moving the file in a cleaning motion. An endodontic irrigator tip includes a hub and a cannula coupled to the hub. The hub includes a neck having a distal stop end which ensheathes the proximal portion of the cannula. The distal stop end is angled with respect to the longitudinal axis of the hub. The stop end prevents the insertion of the cannula beyond a desired distance, thereby preventing perforation of the apex of the root canal. The stop end has a substantially greater diameter than the diameter of the cannula Thus, the stop end of the neck rests on the occlusal surface of the crown of the tooth while the cannula extends the desired distance within the root canal.

A dental or medical instrument containing device includes a container and a supporting material. The supporting material supports an instrument, such as an endodontic file, within the container. A disinfecting solution within the container permeates the supporting material such that a distal insertion end of the instrument is immersed within the disinfecting solution. The disinfecting solution is preferably capable of maintaining the distal insertion end of the instrument in at least an aseptic condition. The supporting material maintains the instrument in an upright position such that the proximal end of the instrument is readily grasped.

The present invention relates to an endodontic instrument for rapid mechanical widening of the canal mouth and rectification of the first two thirds of the dental root canals. It comprises a head (2, 3, 4) and an elongated conical body or tine (1) joined to the head (2, 3, 4) with a neck part (5). The tine (1) is disaligned with respect to the head (2, 3, 4) in that the neck part (5) has a straight portion (5a), coaxial with the head, and a portion (5b) with an axis which is oblique and coplanar in relation to the axes of the tine and head.
