A method for balancing the torque generated by the cylinders of an internal combustion engine comprising the stages of: determining for each cylinder quantity which indicates the torque generated by the cylinder in a given engine cycle; determining for each cylinder a nominal fuel amount to be injected in this cylinder in a subsequent engine cycle; determining for each cylinder a correction coefficient of the nominal fuel amount to be injected in the cylinder in this subsequent engine cycle according to the quantity determined for this cylinder; correcting the nominal fuel amount to be injected in each cylinder according to the correction coefficient determined for the cylinder itself; and injecting into each cylinder the corresponding corrected fuel amount.

Method for balancing the torque generated by the cylinders of an internal combustion engine, in particular a direct-injection diesel engine provided with a common rail injection system

In a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine, equipped with an electronically controlled hydraulic system for the variable operation of the engine's inlet valves, an indicator of the differences in the amount of air aspirated by the cylinders of the engine during the respective induction phase is provided and said system controls the various inlet valves of the engine in a differentiated manner, varying the time and/or opening travel for the purpose of minimizing the differences between the amounts of air aspirated by the various cylinders of the engine.

There is described a control device for controlling the speed of an engine of a vehicle, and having a tracer block which receives a target engine speed indicating the desired engine speed, and a maximum engine torque, and supplies a reference engine speed indicating the behaviour of the engine speed during a transient speed state towards the target engine speed, and an open-loop torque indicating the drive torque which must be produced by the engine during the transient speed state for the engine speed to follow the reference engine speed; an observer block which receives a measured engine speed indicating the engine speed, and a combustion torque indicating the drive torque generated by fuel combustion, and supplies an observed engine speed representing an estimate of engine speed made on the basis of a system model and as a function of the combustion torque and the measured engine speed, and an observed resisting torque representing an estimate of the total resisting torque acting on the drive shaft of the engine and made as a function of the observed engine speed and the measured engine speed; and a controller block which receives the open-loop torque, the reference engine speed, the observed engine speed, and the observed resisting torque, and supplies the combustion torque; the controller block controlling the engine so that the drive torque generated by fuel combustion equals the combustion torque.
