A container is provided comprising a body defined, at least in part, by a film, the body including at least one side seal, at least two chambers separated, at least in part, by a peelable seal, and the film including a sealant layer having a bimodal thermal behavior such that the side seal is a permanent seal and the peelable seal can, at least in part, be separated.

The present invention provides a peelable seal for a multi-chambered container including a first edge and a second edge. At least one of the first edge or second edge includes a stress bearing portion and a non-stress bearing portion.

Peelable seal

A formed, filled, and sealed container, access port and method for establishing fluid flow from the container to an administrative set is provided. The container is collapsible and has an inlet and an outlet. A hollow port is sealed to the container and a perforator inside the port pierces and becomes embedded in the container. Solution in the container is withdrawn into the port. A line attached to the port and an administrative set further establishes flow between the container and the administration set. The port may be operated with a single-hand to establish fluid flow from the container to the administrative set. After the perforator is embedded in the container, a lock on the port prevents the perforator from removal from the container. Activation of the lock produces an audible and/or visible notification.

Stable single bicarbonate-based solutions are provided. The bicarbonate-based single solution of the present invention includes at least calcium and bicarbonate and is stored or packaged in a sterile manner within a container with a gas barrier. The single solutions of the present invention can remain stable for three months or more. In this regard, the stable and single bicarbonate-based solutions of the present invention can be readily and effectively used during medical therapy, such as dialysis therapy.

A port, a container and a method for accessing a port for injecting or withdrawing a liquid from the container are provided. The port may allow for the administration of, for example, a drug, to a patient and may be located on the container. The port has a septum having a target area. The port also has a support ring in contact with the septum. A cap is provided to protect the septum. The cap has a ring handle and allows for removal and exposure of the target area of the septum. A needle, for example, may be used to penetrate the septum allowing the addition or withdrawal of a liquid or other drug to or from the container.

The present invention provides devices and methods for stabilizing bicarbonate-based solutions for peritoneal dialysis or hemofiltration. The bicarbonate-based solutions of the present invention are formulated and stored in at least two parts&mdash;an alkaline bicarbonate concentrate and an acidic concentrate. The alkaline bicarbonate concentrate is adjusted to have a pH of about 8.6 to 10.0. The acidic concentrate is adjusted to have a stable, acidic pH ranging from about 1.0 to 3.0. Upon mixing, although some variation in the pH of the mixed bicarbonate solution exists, the inventors have discovered that with the appropriate selection of the parameters of the concentrates, the pH of the mixed solution is always within an acceptable physiological range.

A system and a method are provided for admixing solutions. The system includes containers separately accessible by one or more pumps for mixture of the solutions in a container immediately before administration to a peritoneal cavity of a patient. Alternatively, the system and method allow for direct administration of the mixed solution to the peritoneal cavity of a patient without intermediate mixing thereof. The solutions may be mixed in predetermined ratios as input to the system prior to delivery.

A flexible fluid junction that links three or more fluid ducts is provided. The junction includes a pair of flexible webs with at least three tubes or fluid ducts disposed between the flexible webs. The outer periphery of the webs is sealed together and around the tubes to define a chamber. An end of each tube terminates inside the chamber so that fluid may flow from each tube through the chamber. Still further, a method of manufacturing a flexible fluid junction and a method of using a flexible fluid junction are also provided.

A system and a method are provided for packaging components required for conducting a dialysis procedure. To this end, a rigid container is designed such that other necessary components required for conducting a dialysis procedure may be contained therein prior to use. The rigid container is designed with a lid having a port in the lid such that a drainage line may be connected to the port and the rigid container may be used as a drainage container. The rigid container is constructed from a rigid material such that rigid containers may be stacked during transport and storage of the same. The rigid container may also be re-used for subsequent dialysis procedures.

A frangible connector is situated between the two chambers for mixing the products contained within the chambers as desired. Each chamber has at least one port for filling of product into the chamber. The ports are located on the same exterior side of the container such that the chambers can be filled without folding the bag and by using existing filling equipment.

A method and device for stabilizing and storing bicarbonate solutions is provided. In an embodiment, a device is provided having a container and carbon-dioxide generating substances that include a solid material which upon contact with water generates carbon-dioxide gas. The device may be packaged together with the bicarbonate or in a separate overpouch. The present invention also provides a method for the stabilization of bicarbonate solutions utilizing a means that generates high pressure carbon dioxide.
