A piston for an internal combustion engine includes a piston body having a generally planar crown and a sidewall extending from the crown. A stepped combustion bowl is recessed in the crown and includes an outer bowl recessed relative to the crown and defining a generally planar annular floor surface. The stepped combustion bowl further includes an inner bowl recessed relative to the outer bowl. The inner bowl includes a sidewall that slopes continually inwardly from the outer bowl to a floor surface of the inner bowl. A plurality of protruding lips extend from the sidewall toward a central axis of the piston body.

A method for treating exhaust gas emitted by an internal combustion engine (ICE) in a hybrid architected motor vehicle with an electric motor. The method includes disposing a heater in the exhaust, disposing a first Lean NOx Trap (LNT) downstream of the heater, disposing a second LNT downstream of the first LNT, disposing a passive selective catalytic reduction (SCR) downstream of the second LNT, disposing a hydrocarbon oxidation catalyst downstream of the SCR. The method also includes connecting a controller to the heater, the controller executes a method of controlling the NOx emissions of the ICE, the method includes monitoring a torque demand for the vehicle, determining if the torque demand is large enough to cause the ICE to generate excessive NOx, operating the ICE at a torque less than the torque demand, and operating the motor with the ICE to provide sufficient torque to satisfy the torque demand.

Aftertreatment architecture for internal combustion engine

Methods and systems are provided for controlling fuel injections by a fuel injector in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine. First and second fuel injections are applied in each cycle of a piston in the cylinder. First and second electronic control signals are applied to the fuel injector to generate first and second fuel injections by the fuel injector during a first cycle of the piston. A hydraulic fusion state of the generated first and second fuel injections is determined. A parameter of the applied first and second electronic control signals is adjusted in response to determining the hydraulic fusion state and applied to the fuel injector to generate first and second fuel injections by the fuel injector during a second cycle of the piston subsequent to the first cycle.

Method and system for controlling injections by fuel injectors

A fuel injection control system is usable with an engine, e.g., a diesel engine of a mild hybrid electric vehicle. The control system includes an auxiliary battery, a high-voltage (HV) battery, e.g., 48 VDC, a switching circuit with first and second switching pairs, a controller, and a fuel injector system. The controller opens and closes the switches to command an electrical current from the auxiliary or HV battery according to a predetermined injector current profile. The fuel injector system has one or more control solenoids. Windings of the solenoids are electrically connectable to the HV battery during a boost phase of the profile via opening of the first switching pair and closing of the second switching pair, and to the auxiliary battery during peak, by-pass, hold, and end-of-injection phases of the profile via closing of the first switching pair and opening of the second switching pair.

Mild hybrid powertrain with simplified fuel injector boost

A method is disclosed for operating an internal combustion engine having a turbocharger and an exhaust gas recirculation pipe fluidly connecting an exhaust system to an air intake system upstream of a compressor of the turbocharger. A first value of a parameter indicative of the density of a mixture of fresh air and exhaust gas in the air intake system is determined. A flowing of exhaust gas through the exhaust gas recirculation pipe is interrupted if the first value is lower than a first reference value thereof.

Method of operating an internal combustion engine having a turbocharger

A method for automatically operating a cam-driven pump is disclosed. The pump is monitored to determine whether a specified detachment condition or potential detachment of an actuator of the pump from a driving cam is occurring. The pump is operated in a minimal pressure holding mode to provide a minimal pressure within a working chamber of the pump so as to bias the actuator towards the cam if it is determined that the detachment condition is occurring.

Method and system for operating a cam-driven pump

A system and method of controlling the hydraulic dwell time between a first injection and a second injection performed by a fuel injector of an internal combustion engine are disclosed, in which the injector is equipped with a needle operated by a control valve. A value of a nominal electric dwell time between the first injection and the second injection is determined. An actual instant of hydraulic closing of the fuel injector after the first injection is also determined. A corrected electric dwell time is calculated as a function of the nominal electric dwell time and the actual instant of hydraulic closing of the fuel injector after the first injection. The fuel injector is operated using the corrected electric dwell time.

Method of controlling an injection dwell time between two injections of a fuel injector

An apparatus and method for operating a fuel injector of an internal combustion engine is disclosed. A first energizing electrical current is supplied to an injector solenoid, causing the opening of an injector control volume and a pressure reduction in said injector control volume, for a first energizing time. The first energizing time is predetermined to avoid that the pressure in the injector control volume approximates a value which would cause an injector needle to raise up and a fuel injection to start. After the predetermined time interval, a second energizing electrical current is supplied to the injector solenoid for a predetermined second energizing time, which is a function of a rail pressure (p) and a fuel injection quantity.
