A wireless communication system () includes an ability to discern whether an end of a communication link between a mobile station () and a base station () corresponds to the mobile station () tuning away from a first service to a second, different service. In a disclosed example, a radio network controller () includes a link monitoring portion that uses information regarding the mobile station from the second service to determine a pattern of expected tune aways by the mobile station to the second service. In one disclosed example, the link monitoring portion uses observed mobile station behavior to estimate the pattern of expected tune aways. Whenever an end of a communication link with the mobile station corresponds to an expected tune away, that end is not considered for purposes of service measurement parameters. The disclosed examples provide the ability to avoid mistakenly considering a mobile station-initiated tune away as a dropped link or handoff failure resulting from an issue with the system.

Evaluating lost communication links with mobile stations

A resource allocation algorithm identifies a resource hogger in a wireless communication system data sharing arrangement and control shared resource overuse by the resource hogger. In one embodiment, the base station for a given sector in the system tracks the time-slot usage of each active user in the sector. If the usage for any user reaches a predetermined hogger threshold, normal target QoS enforcement is suspended for that user to allow more time slots to be allocated to the other, non-hogger users. When the resource hogger user's usage falls below the threshold, target QoS enforcement is returned to that user. Temporarily suspending target QoS enforcement for resource hoggers and allocating the remaining resources to other users prevents resource hoggers from deteriorating performance of the entire system.

Method for controlling resource allocation in a wireless communication system

The present invention provides a method of wireless communication using a mobile unit and first and second base stations. The method includes receiving, from the second base station, a notification of a switch of the first base station to the second base station. The method also includes providing at least one message to the second base station in response to receiving the notification.

Method of providing messages to a mobile unit on a forward link

The present invention provides a method of wireless telecommunication. The method includes accessing information indicative of a first mobile unit in response to a signal from the first mobile unit, accessing information indicative of at least one second mobile unit, and comparing the information indicative of the first and second mobile units. The method also includes establishing a call connection with the first mobile unit based on the comparison of the information indicative of the first and second mobile units.

Method for detecting reverse link collisions on an air interface

The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for a wireless communication between a base station and at least one mobile station. The method includes receiving a request for a data rate from the mobile station on a reverse link channel to the base station. The method further includes, in response to the request, skipping a first slot after a delay for a portion of a slot on a forward link transmission before transmitting a data packet in a second slot. By beginning the forward link transmission at the start of the second slot, for example, a software module may cause the base station to skip a slot immediately after the half slot delay. This additional delay of one slot or a portion of the slot may expand radius of a cell for a wireless communication between the base station and the mobile station in a relatively high-speed wireless data network.

In the method for configuration negotiation in a data communication system, an access network receives an access request and a token from an access terminal. The token includes at least one bit associated with a parameter group type, and the bit indicates whether the access terminal is operating according to a default parameter group for the associated parameter group type. The access network sends information to and receives information from the access terminal according to the default parameter group without negotiating a parameter group of the associated parameter group type when a portion of the access network communicating with the access terminal operates according to the default parameter group for the associated parameter group type and the bit indicates the access terminal operates according to the default parameter group for the associated parameter group type.

Method for configuration negotiation in a data communication system

A method of wireless communication over the reverse link. The method may include evaluating a reverse link loading. This evaluation step may involve examining at least two resources associated with reverse link loading within a first time period. Thereafter, a message is broadcast containing information regarding the availability of resources. This message is generated in response to the evaluated reverse link loading. This availability of resources message may correspond with an overload condition, increasing a number of active connections, decreasing the number of active connections, increasing an available transmit rate, maintaining the available transmit rate and/or decreasing the available transmit rate. In one example, the availability of resources message comprises a reverse activity bit.

Method of controlling overload over the reverse link

A wireless data network distinguishes among different users connected to the network and associates each user with a service class that offers a selected level of service. The base station in the network queries the user for its unique user identification code and accesses a database linking user identification codes with their corresponding services classes. The network then controls the service level given to that user based on the service class associated with the user identification code. The user identification code can be sent to the network via existing fields in current standards.

Method of supporting multiple service levels in a wireless data network

A method for determining the reverse link data Rate Limit for mobile stations active on the reverse link of a High Data Rate system is disclosed. In the ideal case, the Rate Limit is based on only the number of mobile stations located in a common sector that are actually active on the reverse link. Currently, the Rate Limit is determined from the total number of mobile stations in a common sector where the total includes mobiles that are transmitting and receiving. Thus, the current method includes mobile stations that are active on the forward link and may not be active on the reverse link. In this invention, a more optimum method of estimating the reverse link loading is obtained from calculations which includes only the mobile stations which are active on the reverse link. An estimate of the reverse link loading of the mobile stations in a common cell is obtained by adding together the data rates of the data sent from each mobile in a common sector during a common frame. This aggregate rate of data during the frame is filtered to minimize irregularities by using the moving average of an infinite impulse response filter and then normalized. The normalized result is a percentage of the maximum achievable aggregate reverse link rate. The final result is compared with a set of threshold values to obtain the maximum Rate Limit that is then set for each mobile station.

Dynamic reverse link rate limit algorithm for high data rate system

The present invention is a method for selectively providing, on demand, a Quality of Service level to an end user's data transmitted from a base station to a mobile station of a High Data Rate system. In the disclosed method, a data base is established which contains the Quality of Service level selected by a mobile user from a plurality of levels for data to be transmitted from the base station to the mobile station. Using the reverse link, an end user at a mobile notifies the base station that it is ready to receive data and specifies the rate at which the data is to be sent. Upon receipt of the request for data from the mobile terminal, the base station accesses and runs a scheduler which determines which user's data is to be transmitted next. For each end user, the scheduler divides the requested data rate by the average rate of data received by the mobile during a specific interval and then combines by adding or multiplying the result with the Quality of Service level requested by the end user for data. The end user that has the greatest final result is normally selected to next receive data. The scheduler then conditions the base station to transmit data to the identified mobile station at the requested rate and selected Quality of Service level.

In the method according to the present invention, a signal from a mobile station is received. The standard deviation of the symbol error rate is determined, and power control with adaptive adjustment of an amount of change in the target signal-to-noise ratio is performed based on the determined standard deviation of the signal error rate and a target associated therewith.

A method for adjusting the power of a probe signal to be transmitted by user equipment to system equipment of a wireless communication system. The power of the probe signal is adjusted based on information received by the user equipment from the system equipment. The information is a local mean of RSSI at the system equipment. The adjusted probe signal is transmitted and thus has an increased likelihood of being detected by the system equipment. Also, the power available for transmitting the probe signal is used more efficiently when the probe signal is adjusted in accordance with the local mean information received by the user equipment from system equipment of the wireless communication system.

Method of improving user access performance by adjusting power of user probe signal

A method for allocating traffic between multiple carriers in a wireless communications system measures loading on the communication system and selects an appropriate carrier from multiple carriers, based upon the loading measured. A first carrier is selected if the load on the first carrier is lower than or equal to the lowest loading of any supplemental carrier among the multiple carriers. If the load on the first carrier is not lower, then the subscriber may be assigned either to a supplemental carrier or the first carrier. The carrier assignment of the subscriber depends upon a predetermined threshold, which preferably considers actual or estimated differential interference between the first carrier and the supplemental carrier.

Enhanced channel allocation among multiple carriers in a spread spectrum communications system

A method of controlling the power in a wireless communication system. In one embodiment of the invention, a base station determines the information rate of a signal to be transmitted to a mobile station, and obtains the variable power control scaling factor based on this information rate. The base station then transmits the variable power control scaling factor to the mobile station. The mobile station determines a target signal quality measurement for a received signal from the base station, such as a target E /N , and scales the target E /N by the variable power control scaling factor. The mobile station also obtains an information rate scaling factor based on the information rate of the received signal, and further scales the target E /N by this information rate scaling factor. The mobile station then compares the target E /N to a measured E /N of the received signal. An increase in power of the received signal is requested when the measured E /N of the received signal is smaller than the scaled E /N . A decrease in power of the received signal is requested when the measured E /N of the received signal is larger than the scaled E /N . Providing the variable power control scaling factor to the mobile station allows frames having an information rate lower than the full rate to be transmitted at a power even lower than the power of a frame having an information rate equal to the full rate times the information scaling factor.

Method of power control for a wireless communication system having multiple information rates

A high priority and/or emergency overload access control system treats a wireless unit as a higher priority wireless unit when the wireless unit is attempting to access a wireless communications system with a high priority call, such as an emergency call. For example, the overload access control system can recognize if the wireless unit is attempting to initiate a call to an emergency number. If so, the wireless unit can perform a persistence test as an emergency class (e.g. overload class ) wireless unit in attempting to access the wireless communications system. Thus, the wireless unit will experience an increased probability of passing the persistence test and thereby reducing the persistence delay in attempting to access the wireless communications system with the emergency call.
