Systems and methods for pre-allocating and utilizing storage space in a relational database are provided. In embodiments a method includes: obtaining transaction data including data regarding record insertions in a relational database, wherein each record of the record insertions is associated with a key value; identifying a type of each of the record insertions as either a random insertion type or a key range insertion type based on the database transaction data, wherein the random insertion type comprises records associated with respective key values inserted in a random order, and the key range insert type comprises records associated with a range of key values inserted within a certain time period; predicting a new range of key values associated with future record insertions based on the type of each of the record insertions; and pre-allocating page space in one or more pages of the relational database for the future record insertions.

Generating and utilizing pre-allocated storage space

Rows are inserted in a database table on a page having a first space reserved for inserting rows of the database table. A second space is reserved for updating data of the inserted rows, wherein reserving the second space includes reserving the second space on the page responsive to inserting each of the rows.

Free space management in a database

A row is inserted in a database table on a page having a first space reserved for inserting rows of the database table. A second space is reserved for adding data to the inserted row, wherein reserving the second space includes reserving the second space on the page responsive to inserting the row, so that the amount of space reserved for adding data to inserted rows grows as more rows are inserted. The page is marked full for the second space independently of whether the first space is full for inserting new rows. Data is added to rows on the page, responsive to detecting that the second space is full, by adding the data to one or more new pages, even though rows may still be inserted on the page using any remaining room in the first space on the page.

A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for managing a table space for a database. The table space is searched to find available free space in a set of partitions in the table space in response to receiving a request to insert a record into a database table in the database. A new partition is created for the table space based on a size for the new partition in response to determining free space is unavailable for the record in the set of partitions. The record is inserted into the new partition.

Partition by growth table space

A base table and related auxiliary table spaces are reorganized concurrently via a database utility. The database utility determines which auxiliary tables are related to the base table and automatically includes their respective auxiliary table in the same invocation of the utility. The reorganization is performed via allocated shadow data sets. The original data sets are switched with the newly built shadow data sets including the LOB shadows.
