Display module for head-mounted display

A head-mountable display device includes a housing defining a front opening and a rear opening, a display screen disposed in the front opening, a display assembly disposed in the rear opening, a first securement strap coupled to the housing, the first securement strap including a first electronic component, a second securement strap coupled to the housing, the second securement strap including a second electronic component, and a securement band extending between and coupled to the first securement strap and the second securement strap.

Head mountable display

A display and vision correction system includes a head-mounted display unit, a glasses frame, and a removable lens assembly. The head-mounted display unit is configured to be worn on a head of a user and includes a display for providing graphical content to the user. The glasses frame is configured to be worn on the head of the user. The removable lens assembly is removably coupleable to the head-mounted display unit and to the glasses frame. The removable lens assembly includes a corrective lens element.

Display and vision correction system with removable lens

A head-mounted device may have left and right optical modules that present images to a user's eyes. Each optical module may have an optical module support structure and a lens and display coupled to the optical module support structure. The head-mounted device may have a head-mounted housing that supports the optical modules. A cover on a rear face of the head-mounted housing may have a pair of openings configured to receive the left and right optical modules. The cover may have a cover layer and left and right cover layer mounting rings respectively configured to engage with the optical module support structures of the left and right optical modules. Sets of magnets in the left and right optical modules may be configured to attract corresponding left and right vision correction lenses. Gaskets may surround the lenses in the optical modules and may prevent environmental contaminant intrusion.

Electronic devices with optical modules

A head-mounted display includes a display, haptic output devices, and a controller. The display unit is configured to be worn on a head of a user and includes a display for providing graphical output to the user. The haptic output devices are coupled to the display unit. The controller that processes directional inputs, determines directional haptic output according to the directional inputs, and controls the haptic output devices to provide the directional haptic output.

Head-mounted display with haptic output

A head-mountable device can include display elements and/or cameras that can be calibrated for accurate recording and visual output. Whereas some aspects of a head-mountable device can be calibrated at the time of production, usage and wear of the head-mountable device can result in certain components becoming misaligned. A case or other reference can be used to calibrate the cameras of the head-mountable device to ensure that the captured images are recorded in a target alignment. The case can be operated with the head-mountable device to calibrate the display elements of the head-mountable device to ensure that the images are output in a target alignment. Such calibration can include consideration of any lenses installed in front of the display elements.

Calibration for head-mountable devices

A display system includes a display, a removable lens assembly, and a lens detection sensor. The removable lens is removably coupleable to the display. The lens detection sensor detects the removable lens assembly coupled to the display. The display system may further include a head-mounted display unit that includes the display and the lens detection sensor. The display system may lens information from the removable lens with the lens detection sensor, and may provide an indicator of the removable lens according to the lens information.

Display system with interchangeable lens

An optical module for a head-mounted device is configured to present content to a user. The optical module includes an optical module housing assembly, a display assembly, and an eye camera. The optical module housing assembly has a first end and a second end. The lens is connected to the optical module housing assembly and positioned at the first end of the optical module housing assembly. The display assembly is connected to the optical module housing assembly and is positioned at the second end of the optical module housing assembly. The display assembly is configured to cause the content to be displayed to the user through the lens. The eye camera is connected to the optical module housing assembly and is positioned at the second end of the optical module housing assembly. The eye camera is configured to obtain images through the lens.

Optical module for head-mounted device

An electronic device such as a head mounted device may have an inner display that displays an image for a user through lenses. Head-mounted support structures may be used to support the display and lenses. One or more external displays may be publicly viewable while the head-mounted device is being worn. The head-mounted support structures may have a front face on which an external display is mounted. One or more finger sensors that are configured to detect touch input, force input, and/or other input from an external object such as a user's finger may be included in the head-mounted device. A finger sensor may have an elongated shape that runs along a peripheral edge of an external display on the front face. Finger sensors may also be located on other portions of the support structures.

Electronic devices with finger sensors

A head-mounted device may have a head-mounted housing. The head-mounted housing may have rear-facing displays that display images for a user. The images are viewable from eye boxes while the head-mounted device is being worn by the user. The displays may be mounted in left and right optical modules that have respective left and right lenses. A positioning system may be used to adjust the spacing between the left and right optical modules to accommodate different interpupillary distances. An adjustable heat extraction system may be provided that includes fans configured to force air between airflow inlets and outlets past heat sinks. The heat sinks may have fins that are adjusted in orientation and/or that are otherwise adjusted based on changes in optical module spacing. The airflow inlets and/or outlets may have adjustable louvers or other movable members that allow these ports to be fully opened, fully closed, or partly closed.

A head-mounted device may have a head-mounted housing. The head-mounted housing may have rear-facing displays that display images for a user. The images are viewable from eye boxes while the head-mounted device is being worn by the user. A publicly viewable front-facing display may be mounted on a front face of the head-mounted housing. A display cover layer may overlap a pixel array associated with the front-facing display. An inactive border area of the display cover layer may overlap optical components. Shutter systems may be provided between the display cover layer and the optical components to selectively block light. Actuators may move shutter members or other movable members to cover and uncover the optical components. A removable cover may be used to protect the display cover layer and may have portions in different areas that have different optical properties.

Electronic devices with optical component protection

An electronic device such as a head-mounted device may have a head-mounted housing that separates an exterior region from an interior region. Optical modules may be mounted in alignment with openings in the rear of the housing. Each optical module may have a display and a lens through which an image on the display may be viewed. To protect the optical modules, the head-mounted device may be provided with photochromic lenses that darken and block sunlight when exposed to ultraviolet light and/or may be provided with shutters, lens caps, protective movable housing portions, tunable lenses that can be adjusted to defocus sunlight, and/or other protective structures for protecting lenses from scratches and for protecting displays from damage due to excessive sunlight exposure. Electrically adjustable protective structures may be operated based on sensor measurements.

Multiple head-mounted devices and/or other electronic devices can operate in concert to provide multiple users with shared experiences and content enjoyment. Such operations can be facilitated by a connection between multiple head-mounted devices and/or other electronic devices to allow different users to receive content. Such a connection can be made possible by a connector that directly and physically connects head-mounted devices and/or other electronic devices to each other and transmits signals there between. By providing a physical connection, the signals can be efficiently transmitted even when other types of connections (e.g., wireless) are not available.

Head-mountable device and connector

A head-mounted device may have optical modules that present images to the user's left and right eyes. The optical modules may move with respect to each other to accommodate different user interpupillary distances. Each optical module may have a lens barrel, a display coupled to the lens barrel that generates an image, and a lens mounted to the lens barrel through which the image is viewable from an eye box. The lens may be a multi-element lens formed from molded lens elements such as molded polymer lens elements. A lens element may be provided with protrusions that form lens tabs. The lens tabs may have coplanar lens tab surfaces that mate with corresponding coplanar mounting surfaces in the lens barrel. Alignment marks may be formed on the protrusions and/or other portions of the lens.
