A pallet clamping device is mounted between forks of a material handling vehicle. The device clamps to a stringer of a pallet using a pair of horizontally moveable jaws. The jaws are resiliently forced toward one another for clamping a stringer so that a clamped pallet will not move off the forks. The jaws are mounted for pivoting and sliding motion relative to mounting pins which, together with links coupling the jaws to a base of the device, tighten jaw closure if a pallet moves away from the forks. The pivoting and sliding motion of the jaws helps align the jaws with pallets not perfectly aligned with the vehicle. Depression of a foot pedal moves the jaws from a closed position to a latched open position for receiving a pallet stringer. The jaws can also be moved to an unlatched open position for receiving a greater width center stringer. Upon release of the operating device from the unlatched open position, the jaws move toward their closed position.

Pallet clamping device

A knurled wheel is coupled to a sensor mounted to one mast member and the wheel is forced into another mast member so that the wheel/sensor rotate upon mast movement. The sensor generates signals, corresponding to mast movement, which are processed conventionally to determine mast height, etc. The knurled wheel forms a track on the contacted mast member and the knurl engages the track. The wheel can be forced into the mast member with a force of six to nine pounds. To enhance the versatility of the mast height sensing device, the thickness of the wheel can be made less than &frac18; inch, for example {fraction (1/16)} inch. The sensor can be an encoder or a sensor bearing and a heater can be provided for operation in cold environments to ensure rotation of the sensor under such conditions.

Materials handling vehicle mast height sensor

A multi-task capable work assist vehicle is designed for transporting an operator and items to be handled by the operator and for elevating the operator with such items supported upon a load tray elevated with the operator. Preferably the load tray is mounted for positioning along a telescoping mast which supports and elevates the operator. A load deck or load platform is provided on a body of the vehicle in addition to the load tray so that items such as packages, tools, parts, merchandise and the like can be carried by the vehicle. Load shelves may also be provided adjacent the load deck to add flexibility and capacity to the load carrying capability of the vehicle. Uses of the vehicle include order picking, in-house service maintenance, stock management, cargo delivery and the like. It is designed to be compact in size and highly maneuverable for use in narrow storage aisles and tight quarters.
