A method for calibrating a force platform includes, providing a force platform and applying an n&#xd7;m grid on a top surface of the force platform via a computing device. Next, applying p known loads on each of the n&#xd7;m grid points of the top surface along a Z-axis being perpendicular to the X and Y axes and along the X and Y axes. Next, taking multipoint measurements at each grid point and for each applied known load along the X, Y and Z axes and generating six measured output signals, exact position coordinates and applied known load magnitude for each grid point. Next, assembling an array of n&#xd7;m&#xd7;p of six equations with six unknown for each grid point and applied known load and then solving the assembled equations and deriving a position and load specific calibration matrix for each grid point.

System and method for three dimensional calibration of force plates

A compact multi-axis load cell with opposing rigid mounting elements includes annular flanges at the perimeter of the elements. A sensing region is formed between the rigid mounting elements by bonding, as by welding or brazing, opposing annular flanges at their end surfaces. To increase the mass and rigidity of the opposing mounting elements, the annular flanges may be partially formed by a peripheral groove, the groove defining a portion of an inside surface of the annular flange. The peripheral groove provides sufficient flange length for affixing strain gauges while positioning internal surfaces of the mounting elements close together in order to reduce the overall length of the load cell. Sensing circuits affixed to the outside surface of the sensing region provide output signals responsive to forces and moments exerted between the rigid mounting elements in at least two substantially perpendicular directions.

A joint motion simulator to simulate biomechanical motion includes a mount to which a prosthetic device is mounted, actuators coupled to the mount to drive the mount, and a programmable controller to drive the actuators to translate the mount and to rotate the mount with a center of rotation controllable independent of translation. The simulator can include a linear actuator to translate the mount in a linear direction substantially parallel to the axis of rotation. The linear actuator can include a piston within a sleeve, the piston being coupled to the mount and being hydraulically driven to translate the mount, and the actuators can be coupled to the sleeve. The controller may be programmed to vary the center of rotation with linear translation and rotation of the mount. Sensors may be included that measure displacement of the actuators. The controller may drive the actuators based on the measured displacement.

Method and apparatus for joint motion simulation

An apparatus and method for a multi-axis wheel transducer are disclosed. The apparatus of the invention comprises a wheel transducer for measuring the loads and moments acting on a vehicle wheel. Tubular load cells positioned in a radial fashion around the perimeter of the transducer hub join the rim and hub. Loads and moments acting on the rim of the wheel are transferred through the spoke-like load cells to the hub of the wheel. Sensors strategically positioned around the circumference of the tubular load cell monitor the intensity of the loads and moments. To detect angular position of the wheel, a light source generates a cone of polarized light to flood the wheel of the vehicle and detector-polarizing filter pairs detect an angle of the polarization relative to the wheel to determine its angular position. The transducer hub computer processes the sensor data and transfers the information via infrared signal to a computer located in the fender of the vehicle.

A multi-axis force platform for determining forces and moments exerted on the platform along x, y and z axes includes at least one multi-axis spring. The multi-axis spring includes a block of rigid material through which a pattern of slots pass through to form a series of deflectable beams separated from each other by the slots. The deflectable beams surround an interior region of the spring and elastically couple the interior region of the spring to an outer region of the spring such that the interior region can deflect relative to the outer region along x, y and z axes when subjected to a load. One or more magnetic sensors are positioned within the interior region of the spring for sensing loads exerted on the spring.

A bolt torque and tension transducer for determining torque and tension on a bolt includes a pair of nested concentric sensing elements. The inner sensing element measures tension on a bolt as well as the thread torque required to tighten the nut on the bolt. The outer sensing element measures the applied torque to the bolt.

A device for measuring displacement and force comprises two masses of material linked together by a parallel beam linkage which permits displacement of one mass relative to the other in a single direction. The displacement or force input to be measured is applied to one of the masses in the allowable direction. The displacement of the masses with respect to each other is sensed by a sensor. In a preferred embodiment, the sensor comprises a Hall effect sensor attached to one of the masses positioned between two magnets attached to the other mass. Movement of one mass relative to the other changes the magnetic field around the Hall effect sensor. The change is sensed by the Hall effect sensor.

An electronic ignition system for a gas burner is battery operated. The battery voltage is applied through a DC-DC chopper to a step-up transformer to charge a capacitor which provides the ignition spark. The step-up transformer has a significant leakage reactance in order to limit current flow from the battery during initial charging of the capacitor. A tank circuit at the input of the transformer returns magnetizing current resulting from the leakage reactance to the primary in succeeding cycles. An SCR in the output circuit is gated through a voltage divider which senses current flow through a flame. Once the flame is sensed, further sparks are precluded. The same flame sensor enables a thermopile driven main valve actuating circuit. A safety valve in series with the main gas valve responds to a control pressure thermostatically applied through a diaphragm. The valve closes after a predetermined delay determined by a time delay orifice if the pilot gas is not ignited.

In a force measuring platform, a top plate 12 is supported on tubular load cells 16. The load cells have strain gages to measure the strain due to the horizontal shear forces. The 'shear' strain gages also measure moments about the Z axis when properly placed in a bridge circuit. Strain gages mounted to measure vertical strain indicate vertical forces and moments about horizontal axes.

A force measuring apparatus includes a platform construction on which forces may be exerted, as for example, by an individual stepping upon a top plate of the platform construction. Apparatus of this nature is commonly referred to in the art as a 'Biomechanics Platform', and may include a bottom plate, a top plate deformable by forces exerted thereon and a plurality of load cell members arranged to yieldably support the top plate in spaced relation to the bottom plate. The load cells are constructed with strain ring means having strain gage elements suitably supported thereon, and the cells further include composite anchoring means for connecting the top plate with strain rings of respective load cells in a unique manner. Each of the composite anchoring means includes a compliant or elastic member which is arranged to transmit, at any given time, an entire load exerted between the top plate and its respective load cell. Also included in each composite anchoring means are retaining elements arranged to engage with a respective elastic member as well as adjacent top plate and strain ring portions. The elastic member is further characterized by a compliance with respect to rotation and lateral translation of the top plate greater than the compliance of the entire load cell structure, thereby to eliminate to a very large extent transmission of erroneous force signals resulting from deformation of the top plate.
